Former Libertarian Party presidential candidate Gary Johnson is considering jumping into the race for the U.S. Senate in New Mexico, raising the profile of a race that Democrats seeking to capture the majority in Congress had seen as a safe seat.

Johnson consultant Ron Nielson told The Associated Press on Friday that the former governor is “strongly considering” running if Libertarian candidate Aubrey Dunn quits the race as expected.

“He is weighing it over right now,” Nielson said. “He doesn’t want to get into a race he can’t win.” […]

During the presidential campaign, Johnson vowed to cut military spending, raising eyebrows in his home state, which relies on its three military bases to help offset its status as one of the poorest states in the nation.

As governor, Johnson was known for vetoing bill after bill before he became a national curiosity for advocating legalized marijuana.

He was nicknamed “Governor Veto” for 700-plus vetoes during his two terms in Santa Fe. …

Does Johnson still have any significant following in NM?

Not really. The only remote shot he has at the Senate seat is to run as the Republican nominee. Running as a Libertarian ensures that the Democrat wins again with a split field.

I remember hearing about this guy. Stay very clear of voting for him. Not a good guy if I remember right.

Why would Johnson want a Dem to win the seat? Seriously.

He was an amazing governor. Make no mistake about that.
Shut down a democrat corruption industry when he was there. Built the best road in the state from Roswell up to I-40 and Albuquerque up to the four corners.

Both roads were deathtrap rural single lanes before that routinely had wrecks killing 5, 6, 8 at a time.
He snookered the democrats by using some innovative and legal type funding that kept the Democrat bribe culture outta the game.
They despised him for that.

Today he has gone off the deep end, gun banner, and also nasty. But he used to be a very good guy.

I believe that Johnson is deep state. And the libertarian party has gone off the rails After he was involved with it.

One of the reasons I didn’t vote for Johnson is he claimed to be a libertarian, while supporting a carbon tax. I mean, really? That’s a libertarian position?

Are you saying Johnson was some sort of plant by the permanent state government types in Santa Fe whose goal was to wreck the Libtard brand in NM and help the permanent gov types keep a lock on the Senate seat?

Today he has gone off the deep end, gun banner, and also nasty. But he used to be a very good guy.

The question then is what happened? Was he offered ‘arrangements’ he could not refuse or what? When a person radically changes temperament and philosophy there is generally a very bad reason for it.

Not just his politics that have changed. He had a reputation as a really clean-cut guy: no alcohol, running marathons, strict diet, etc.

Now, I don’t think legal marijuana is just a policy position for him.

” Running as a Libertarian ensures that the Democrat wins again with a split field.”

Democrats are assured of wining it anyway with out him in the race so there is nothing to lose.

Good question. For most Americans it means nothing for good reason, there is nothing about it to be of interest. I think it was Senator Norris of Nebraska who was asked some question about some aspect of WW1 and he said he didn't know and basically didn't care as it had no interest to or bearing on what the citizens of Nebraska considered to be significant issues. sometimes sounding like a know nothing just means you don't care about Globalony.

I consider it a badge of honor for an American not to know the details of Aleppo. Much more sane than these fakes who start in detailing all about Aleppo and pronouncing the name of the local mayor with a perfect islamic accent.

So fake.

They weren’t taking about Syria at the moment and the news chick asked about Aleppo. Sounded like one of those acronym terms for some legislation.

Why do you call him a gun banner? I haven't heard that.
