Rand’s Reveal: Paul Just Announced His Decision On The Kavanaugh Confirmation
The Daily Caller ^ | 07/30/2018 | Kevin Daley

GOP Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky will support Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the U.S. Supreme Court, despite early misgivings about his nomination.

The senator’s support, initially in doubt, staves off a fatal defection that could have proved disastrous to Kavanaugh’s confirmation prospects.

In a lengthy tweet thread posted Monday morning, Paul said he was satisfied with Kavanaugh’s legal writings in a range of areas, despite his concerns about the judge’s views on the National Security Agency’s (NSA) metadata collection program. The senator specifically identified the First and Second Amendments, separation of powers, property rights, and agency law as topics on which Kavanaugh “will carefully adhere to the Constitution and will take his job to protect individual liberty seriously.”

With Paul’s commitment to vote for Kavanaugh, the only members of the Republican caucus whose support for the judge is in question are GOP Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska.

I said from the get-go there was no way Rand Paul was going to vote against Kavanaugh.

I agree with Paul. Kavenaugh is highly suspicious from early days. Character doesn’t always change but sometimes poor character hides. A good character explains previous poor character. But at this point, how can you not confirm this guy? And hope for another appt soon? If Kavenaugh stays “buyable” like he was for the Clintons, we will all be sorry.

Who could have seen this coming (for the umpteenth time)?

Rand, get a different act, one we haven’t seen countless times before.

A number of us predicted his grandstanding (again) would result in a vote for Kavanaugh.

I’m tired of him pulling this nonsense over and over.

His followers think he’s simply implementing due diligence. I think he’s implementing a “look at me” moment, to convince folks he’s the real deal.

After so many times him doing this sort of thing, I’ve grown tired of his act.

But he’ll absolutely get the votes of the Dems in RED states, so Kavanaugh is “in”!

SPOT ON!

I was going to post something similar, but on second thought decided to go with the Red state Dem votes.

There is a fine line between the two and often aspects of both are present.

But if Paul says he wants to check the man’s writings, I feel confident that he is in fact putting in the time to do just that-examine the man’s writings. As long as he’s doing the work, he has every right, and obligation even, to say he is going to withhold his support until after he’s had a chance to complete the process. I’m especially sensitive about surveillance issues myself so I’m happy to see Rand doing some watchdog duty on the issue.

If Rand simply withheld his comments until after he had checked the guy out, I would have a lot more respect for him.

He walks out to a microphone and makes a big splash, when he doesn’t need to make any statement at all.

It’s for effect, and I don’t care for it.

I don’t see 52 Senators making that kind of play, just him.

I think they will only oppose him if they think they can actually block him. If Manchin supports Kavanaugh, they will no longer have that ability.
