Hundreds of gun owners in Florida have been ordered to give up their guns under a new law that took effect after the deadly Parkland shooting in February, according to a report published Monday.

The Risk Protection Order, signed by Florida Gov. Rick Scott just three weeks after a gunman killed 17 people at Stoneman Douglas, aims to temporarily remove weapons from gun owners who have been deemed by a judge to possibly be a threat to themselves or others.

Roughly 200 firearms have been confiscated in the state since the law was enacted, Sgt. Jason Schmittendorf, of the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, told WFTS-TV. "Around 30,000 rounds of ammunition" were also taken, he said.

A five-person team in the county that's worked solely on the risk protection law reportedly has filed 64 risk protection petitions in court. Broward County, according to the news outlet, has filed 88 risk protection petitions since March.

Are you compensated? Are you able to transfer ownership? Can you sell it after the confiscation to recoup your money?

I don't know but I doubt it.

This new law doesn't sound legal.

People with weapons were in compliance with the law before the "law" was passed.

Now they're out of compliance once the new "law" passes.

Previously legal possessions are now confiscated under new "law" and it doesn't appear there's compensation for those possessions being confiscated, just a lengthy and expensive court process to get them back.

How is this "law" Constitutional?

Heller VS.

Unless these are all restraining orders. And unless you have no money to fight it.

Better, really....to buy yourself a big damn safe. Then lose all your weapons. Then lose the combination to your safe.

Yeah.....dirty exgirlfriends are always going to be able to take your guns away for a year or two minimum....

Unless, you had a canoeing accident.

It’s essentially an extension to the Domestic Violence Restraining Order.

With that....it was someone you used to bang that could take your guns away.

Florida extended that to family members.

Unsure whether you bang them or not, that is your business

Bingo! This oughtta be called the "Ain't ex-Wives and ex-Girlfriends a bitch!" law.

Just the mere thought on their part that something might happen triggers a weapons seizure?

That can't be right or Constitutional.

It's ex post facto and thus unconstitutional.

A ninth grade civics class could tell anyone that.

Or it used to be able to, anyway.

who have been deemed by a judge

I think we should have 10 or 15 judges that run the country.

Or maybe more, depending on the "deeming" workload... ROFL face ROFL face ROFL face

It is almost as if gunowners are not permitted to have ex-husbands, ex-wives, ex-boyfriends, and ex-girlfriends.
Anything they seemingly say about a gunowner is immediately accepted as true gospel...leaving the gunowner to explain himself or herself.
One never hears media coverage about a lying ex being prosecuted for filing completely fraudulent police reports.

Couldn't remember the term from my ninth or tenth grade civics class. Too long ago and I'm getting ready to try and go back to sleep after waking up an hour ago. Too damn' early.

Thanks for your post, I can stop my google search for it now and hopefully rest easy. :-)

I thought we didn’t have ex post facto laws. Maybe I was wrong. 👎 It may not be constitutional, but when was the last time libtards and RINOs paid any attention to the constitution?

Here in Washington state, we have a recently enacted “Do Not Sell A Gun To Me” list.

People who are high risk for suicide or reckless behavior voluntarily put their own names on this list to prevent themselves from making an impulsive, and possibly fatal, gun purchase.

I laughed at first, but now I think it may be a good idea that will save some lives.
