Poll: Senate race between Cruz, O'Rourke a dead heat
The Hill ^ | 08/01/18 | Max Greenwood

The Texas Senate race between Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Rep. Beto O'Rourke (D-Texas) is neck and neck, according to a new poll released Wednesday.

The 2018 Texas Lyceum Poll showed Cruz leading O'Rourke by a hair — 41-39 percent among likely voters. That's well within the survey's margin of error of 4.67 percentage points.

That's a particularly tight margin for Texas, which has not elected a Democrat to the Senate in three decades.

The findings come weeks after O'Rourke, a three-term congressman, reported a staggering $10.4 million fundraising haul in the second quarter of the 2018 cycle, bringing his cash-on-hand to just under $14 million.

That's far more than the incumbent Cruz, who raised about $4.1 million in the second quarter and has about $9.3 million in cash on hand, Federal Election Commission filings show.

Texas has normally been a reliably red state, voting for President Trump over his Democratic challenger Hillary Clinton by 9 points in 2016.

Chris Wilson, a former pollster for Cruz's 2016 presidential campaign, called the poll's findings into question on Wednesday, saying that the partisan breakdown for the survey “looks nothing like Texas voters.”

I'm not in Texas so I don't know how this compares with voter sentiments.

Is it a close race?

Polls are often used to shape public opinion instead of accurately measuring it. Just saying.

Before 2016, I (I am not a Texan) to see and hear Cruz a lot. I guess it was for his POTUS run? Now, I forget he even exists, I see him on TV so little.

From the Texas Lyceum Website (Source of the poll):

In 1980, a group of young Texans from business, professional, and academic communities came together at the Bent Tree Country Club in Dallas to discuss an idea: that Texas was at a turning point in its history.... It had an opportunity, indeed a responsibility, to become a great state. To achieve that destiny, however, it had to overcome problems that are common to vibrant, growing societies such as water, transportation, support for education, long-range planning, and others. To address those problems they concluded that there was a need to bring together the various segments of the state in a non-partisan, non-political, and non-adversarial setting.

Nothing more needs said.

If the Democrats win the senate seat in Texas then it’ll be proof positive that the Russians are hijacking our elections. Or a sign the apocalypse is upon us, one of the two.

How ironic would it be if President Trump held a rally in Texas to support Senator Cruz . . .

[repeating to myself: “forgive and forget,” “forgive and forget”....]

Read My Lips....Ted Cruz will win by a million vote victory margin. End of story!!! Media Polls. any polls are bogus. Both punsters & Pollster adrift at sea!!!

Remember 2016 and the pundits told us all that Arizona, Texas, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, etc., would all go for Hillary Clinton!!! “Hogwash”, both Greg Abbott and Ted Cruz will win easily in Texas. The Hill, as usual is asleep at the wheel, dreaming about political fairy tales.

The more money O’Rourke raises, the less money that can go to other Democrats.

Cruz has this locked up. In the primaries, GOP turnout greatly exceeded Democrat turnout and the GOP had virtually no contested races. Cruz to win by at least 15%.

That’s probably because when guys like me get a call from a pollster they are dismissed, with extreme prejudice.

I agree polls are being used to tell the public which bandwagon to jump on but I’m curious about ‘the man on the street’ view of this election.
