Congress moves to blunt Trump's shutdown threat

It's amazing how the prospect of being hung concentrates the mind wonderfully.

Congress, facing a serious threat from Donald Trump to shut down the government if he doesn't get funding for border security, including his wall, is working to mitigate that threat by passing spending bills in advance of the September 30 deadline.

Washington Times:

Congress is taking big strides to defuse President Trump’s shutdown threat, working to pass as many spending bills as possible before next month’s deadline so most of the government will remain open no matter what Mr. Trumpdemands on border security.

On Wednesday, the Senate cleared a $154 billion package that funds the Food and Drug Administration, the IRS and other programs for 2019. Senators now have passed seven of the 12 bills needed to keep the government open. The House has passed six.

Those measures still need to be reconciled in a conference committee, but lawmakers are pushing to have as many as nine bills completed before the end of the fiscal year on Sept. 30, putting those operations on firm footing and outside the reach of a government shutdown.

“This is actually the way this work is supposed to be done,” said Sen. Roy Blunt, Missouri Republican. “It’s supposed to be done before the 30th of September. It’s supposed to be done in smaller packages where members have a chance to debate the amendments on the floor, and we’re doing that.”

It has been years since Congress passed even one of the dozen bills on time, and Democrats and Republicans are intent on doing better this year to avoid an election-eve shutdown showdown.

Politicians, being generally cautious critters, don't want to take the chance that voters would blame them for even a partial shutdown.

Which one will include the whole bill for the wall?

I would only sign that one first.

Don’t forget, the Democrats want to make the wall an election issue. November is not far beyond September. And the democrats love government shutdowns, especially with Republicans in control.

If Trump plays this right, he can help the November turnout on our side. But he will have to be 3 moves ahead again.

This headline is silly. Congress is, surprisingly, doing what they’re supposed to do. This is not a cr, these are appropriations bills. They have bowed to Trump’s threat of never again signing an omnibus bill with military spending migaled with tranny bathroom spending. He can accept the military spending in one appropriations bill and kill the tranny bathroom spending in another. This actually gives Trump a better hand. He could hold be up appropriations for dhs (I don’t know the actual 12 appropriations) without impaction any other part of the government and this would but the focus squarely on the issue under Contention. This means Dems don’t get to make it about Granny’s social security check. I say, well done

You mean... Congress has started to fulfill its constitutional duty again? In reaction to President Trump?

Thank you for that explanation. I am reserving comment until I understand this issue better.

If the left wants to make the building of the wall an election issue... again, and send it to the people in November, let’s do that. They’ll get smoked.

The headline is not correct. Both houses have already passed bills for the wall but haven’t agreed on how much. My guess is that the President will hold out on signing away enough spending to put some pressure on them and will probably do plenty more to upset their delicate sensitivities in the meantime.

He’s doing fine.

“Congress, facing a serious threat from Donald Trump to shut down the government if he doesn’t get funding for border security, including his wall, is working to mitigate that threat by passing spending bills in advance of the September 30 deadline.”

could be that was the whole point of Trump’s tweet in the first place: to get Congress moving ...

"Hanged. The word is 'hanged'."

In school, we were taught that "clothes are hung and people are hanged -- so you'd better behave."

Do you remember the last shutdown? In 2013, Ted Cruz filibustered Obamacare funding, and we had a shutdown.

The RINOs, Rovians, and the rest of the GOPe all warned that this would destroy the Republicans chances to take the Senate and they would probably lose the House.

So what happened? The Republicans made small gains in the House and won 9 seats to take the Senate.

Now, the Establishment types are out warning that the Republicans will lose Congress if there is a shutdown. My bet is that it ends up about like the last one.
