White House says Trump's resolve is firm on China trade (Kudlow)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A top White House adviser warned China on Friday not to underestimate U.S. President Donald Trump's resolve in a brewing trade battle between the world's two largest economies, showing little concern over Beijing's threat to impose retaliatory tariffs on $60 billion worth of U.S. goods.

"They better not underestimate the president," Larry Kudlow said in an interview on Fox Business Network. "He is going to stand tough."

China on Friday said it was prepared to place additional tariffs on 5,207 goods imported from the United States, ranging from liquefied natural gas to some aircraft. The move was in reaction to a threat from Washington earlier this week to increase tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods to 25 percent from 10 percent.

For the life of me I can’t understand why this President would bother with a Coke-head drunk like kudlow. Plenty of other people out there who would do him (and us)proud.

kudlow has been a Bush globalist from the beginning. He is NOT to be trusted.

I agree with you. But Kudlow is representative of a big block of the people who are in China. Right now.

They did get there, by selling out American industry.

That is true. But they are important to involve in this. Granted they are primarily, sold out. But it is useful to have them involved, anyway.

If they are about to suffer big-time for selling SO MUCH of what used to be America’s industry to China, it makes sense anyway to involve them in the process.

Even if they are largely, the very same people who completely sold out America for the entire last generation.

Maybe. I am not as well versed in international trade as it sounds like you are. Obviously President Trump sees it that way.

I will say that from what I see Wilbur Ross and Peter Navarro are very good people to have around in these tenuous trade times.

We need all kinds of manufacturing, including textiles here asap.

The middle class must thrive, or America will not survive.

Nope, I have zero inside information.

I did live in China very early in the opening up process, but it was not any sort of official capacity.

Since then a LOT of people have sold out. I no longer feel China should benefit the way they have, for the entire last generation.

I think Trump has a similar view.

It is why I have supported his candidacy from the beginning.

Trump seems to be saying, what I have been thinking for a while.

America’s trade relationship with China is completely lop-sided.

Fix it, Mr. President.

It is time.

Good to hear. However I fear Xi’s strategy is simply to out wait Trump for up to six years or until someone who is more flexible than the current administration. China plays the long game with infinite patience.

Understood.

But just to be clear, I didn’t mean to imply you have an inside track necessarily, just it seems you have a deeper understanding of this issue than I do.

MAFA!

“””””””””””China plays the long game with infinite patience”””

The USA lives by what happens in a quarter of a year. The Chinese think in terms of a quarter of a century.

“Buy American” will carve a huge slice out of China’s economic strength. China has many more mouths to feed and people to employ. WE are the largest consumer in the world and account for around a quarter of the market.Every move President Trump makes in the China deal strengthens our economy and weakens theirs. The China pig is going to squeal and blink before Trump ever does.

“I can’t understand why this President would bother with ...Kudlow.”

Trump can deal with his differences (he can deal with Democrats like Cohen, even communists like Kim Jong Un. By many reports, he selects a range of opinions on purpose, and gets them to hash things out amongst themselves, as well as keep him in touch with what different groups are thinking and feeling.

Kudlow is very well connected in business circles. He can talk to the nuts and bolts of arcane finance and economic topics, and is an experienced media figure. He has a great skill set to sell the President’s policies to a significant audience of influential people in the business world.
