As I’ve stated before here, if wages for waiters are over $10 per hour (the federal level is less than $3) where I happen to be, then I simply figure that the tip is built into the price on the menu, and they will get what the bill says, and not a penny more.

If waiters get $15 an hour I’m not tipping ever again

I’ve actually left some big tips recently for BAD waiters.

I figured they aren’t going to have that job for very long.

“Forty-six percent of tipped workers nationwide rely on public benefits” like food stamps, Hallett told me.

I pointed out that many tipped workers are eligible for benefits because they don't report tip income to the government.

Why do I want to encourage people to get welfare AND my tips?? And John’s okay with this??

You have to wonder why tipping is a supposed norm because the waitstaff isn’t being paid enough - where does it say that in society we have to help pay the wages of some servers who just take the order and deliver the food; I’ve seen tip buckets at cash registers for someone just taking your money for the food you ordered. I’d love to get 10% of each ticket holder after I’ve landed the plane - stand at the flight deck door with a bucket .....

I was raised with the “old fashioned notion” that TIPPING IS SOMETHING EARNED!!

Nowadays, all these damnable busybodies have made it “more the norm” for a restaurant or a restaurant delivery service website, to “gratuitously” fix a percentage on every order, prior to the amount decided to quantify the sales tax.

This precludes how the performance of your waiter/server was, and/or the condition of the meal, when ordered in house.

When I do tip, and it is warranted AND EARNED, I have always tipped 10% for breakfast; 10 or 15% for lunch, and 20% for dinner, whether the bill is $20 or $50 for me and my beloved.

Waiters (to include females) are so accustomed to receiving tips that if they are cut off, the quality of their service likely will suffer, even to the extent of sabotage of food, despite receiving more in wages than many of their customers.

I just did, and he is countering her desire for a higher wait staff wage by saying that will make them lose welfare, and she’s okay with that, AS AM I.

I guess so...they’ll have to learn to live a new lifestyle. A ‘living wage’ lifestyle.

The big government people is looking at the taxes they think they will get when they force wait staff into getting a traceable income and are no longer getting tips.

About the only benefit to being a waiter at that point is the possibility of getting a free meal while on shift.

The tip system is the ultimate incentive to providing good service, because they don’t get tipped if you aren’t happy.

Absent that and it just becomes a job, and a mostly terrible job at that.

She argues that they need the raise because of needing assistance. He retorts that they cheat the system to qualify.
