WASHINGTON, DC — Work on the Mountain Valley Pipeline has come to a halt after a Friday order from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. The agency issued the stop work order a week after the Fourth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals pulled a permit needed for construction in the National Forest.
The 300 miles pipeline is under construction to carry natural gas from Wetzel County, West Virginia to Pittsylvania County, Virginia. FERC ordered a halt to all work with the exception of what it considered measures necessary to land management and stabilization of the right of way and work areas.
A week ago, the federal judges vacated allowance from the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management to allow for the pipeline to pass through just over three miles of the Jefferson National Forest.
Developers of the Mountain Valley Pipeline says the decision to halt work is disappointing, but add they are confident the two federal agencies will satisfy court requirements on the permits. However, those developers said there was no clear timeline on when that might happen.
Environmental and citizen groups hailed FERC’s Friday decision as a victory for the environment and landowners impacted by the pipeline right of way.
Reacting to the news of the work stoppage order, landowner Maury Johnson who has been fighting the pipeline offered this statement to MetroNews.
The Stop Work order issue by FERC for the Mountain Valley Pipeline is just one step in the right direction. It is one battle in creating a clean energy future that our children and grandchildren deserve. Unfortunately the Certificate should have never been issued to begin with as it was based on false information and illegal actions. Hopefully the Appalachian Trail will not be impacted any further and the region can kill this project forever and start the long process of restoring the damage already done to our beautiful region and pristine waters.

This is very disappointing.
Back when the EPA was formed, and I saw that an Environmental Impact Statement was required to do *anything*, I thought, this is crazy. It turns the EPA into an agency that must be bowed down to to do *anything* in this country. It turns the Constitution inside out.
I was right. This is insane.
Again, black robed tyrants overruling the decision of lawfully appointed officials of the executive branch.
Who needs elections when we have our lifetime-appointed betters to make all decisions for us serfs?
10 years ago, environmentalists were calling natural gas "clean energy". The Sierra Club even accepted donations from Natural Gas companies because they were deemed "good energy".
Of course, they didn't know this nation is sitting on 200 years worth of natural gas at the time.
Now that we have natural gas in abundance, the socialists have changed their mind and now call it "dirty energy".
These are the same people who predicted fracking would poison our water and destroy our land.
They are never right about their predictions, but keep fighting to stop what their masters tell them to fight.
Exactly right. Their objective is to destroy the US, not make it better for “the children.”
A life with nothing but solar and wind power will be awful. Unreliable, expensive energy and all the ills that will cause.
What’s going to happen when all those wind turbines wear out and dot the landscape with their aging carcasses? I’m not against alternative power, the technology isn’t quite there yet.
Mr. Johnson, and some others, just wanted more money for the right of way through their properties but the pipeline wouldn’t pay what they wanted.
If it means stopping the whole project simply out of spite, they will be more than happy to do just that.
I think it’s time to declare war on the judiciary. Ignore their rulings. Th y have no real enforcement power. Where in the constitution does it grant 1 non elected judge the same equal power as entire executive branch? They legislate from the bench. The flagrantly ignore laws. They ignore the constitution they swear to uphold.Time for Trump to ignore their rulings and demand reform to guard against their tyranny
Mining companies have to post huge bonds to get permits to open surface mines. That bond assures the land will be reclaimed when they are done mining or go out of business.
There are no such bonds for windmills to my knowledge. When they fail, they’ll just be left there to ruin the landscape for 1,000 years. Kind of like a very ugly Stonehenge.
Our friend runs a food truck at a motel at which pipeline workers stay during the week while working. He is a hard worker, as are the pipeline workers. Why are they being laid off?
He said pipeline protesters were in the trees during the spring, prior to the start of the work.
This judge has done what a group of scraggly hippies could not do.

That’s what I was thinking too. Well - it is West Virginia. They can just re-open a nearby coal mine and start running the trucks again.
(Mmmm - I wonder if this stop-the-pipeline group is really just a bunch of coal miners!?)
I’m guessing that the pipeline folks are correct. They just need to jump through a few more hoops, maybe pay the judge - um - I mean pay some fines, and they’ll be back in business.
Same think happened in North Dakota - they had the entire pipeline in the ground except for a few miles in the middle on that contested land.
