Almost like clockwork, a growing US economy cranks out new jobs. In July, it added 157,000 positions, the US Labor Department reported Friday; in June, 248,000.
But with unemployment near 20-year lows and some analysts touting “full employment,” are there enough available people to keep filling them?
Population growth can account for about a third to a half of the new hires. But to keep the economy growing, people not currently working need to come off the sidelines to reenter the workforce. And that’s what’s happening. The story of who and how is a sometimes messy process, with people struggling with issues from health to criminal backgrounds getting jobs, losing them, and then gaining the courage to try again.
It’s also a tale of progress and hope.
Down the corridor from a law office, 10 floors above Boston’s bustling financial district, a dozen men and women are seated around tables shaped in a U. They’re taking an intensive two-week course here at JVS CareerSolution, learning how to find work despite a background of addiction or criminal activity.
There’s general agreement here that the economy is strong and that it’s a good time to look for a job. But there are complications.
“I have never had a problem finding a job; I have always had a problem keeping a job because of my CORI,” says Alonzo, wearing a bright white T-shirt. (The Monitor did not ask for last names in order to respect the privacy of the class.)
Massachusetts’ CORI, or Criminal Offender Record Information, is an obstacle for many in the class. Mark, a former mechanic, was recently rejected for jobs at two garages because of his criminal background. “You try to change your life,” he says, “and it's not working.”

Those left? White middle age American tech workers are still affected by the many MILLIONS of H1-Bs. Also, those with disabilities (yet fully capable of doing the job) are available.
I bet they are having trouble finding DRUG-FREE applicants.
If the job market gets tight enough, businesses will give people with minor records a chance. Perhaps change the system so that after N years with no further trouble, the records get sealed.

I don’t believe the unemployent numbers for a second. The unemployment numbers have een fudged so draatically over the past 30 years, they are eaningless. Just like the inflation rate. Millions and millions of eople are still unemployed, underemployed, or want to work full time rather than part time. Millions of people are going uncounted, from college grads living with Mom, to 50 year olds forced into retirement otpr on SSDI when they ould rather work.r
It is like the current housing boom. There is a large shadow inventory that still has yet to hit the market. A lot of ese are renrals that sellers gave up trying o sell after housing collapsed. They still want o sell,but they are just now waking up to the current sellers market. When they all do, inventoy is going to shoot up.
The uneployment numers are bogus lies. All lies. The economy is booming under President Trump, and we should have full employment by the end of his 2nd term, especially after the infrastructure bill is passed, but we are not even close to full employment yet. Not as it ould have been counted 40 years ago.

My 20 year old lazy assed POS step-son. When he was 19 he went and got $197/month in food stamps when he moved out. He managed to lose every job he ever had and even got himself kicked out of Marine Corps during boot camp. Haven’t seen him since he got back and last I heard he’s staying with his equally worthless dad who will not put any pressure on him to get a job. Sad part is every where you look the businesses are posting Now Hiring signs in their windows.
His mother and I were just saying this weekend he’s probably the only person in the Tri City, Washington area that doesn’t have a job...

Even 8 years ago I knew of one particular employer that had that problem.
Jobs should go to Americans first, of course. But if there is a shortage of workers, let the employers compete for them. The best workers get the best jobs for the best companies at the best rates, etc. No government intervention. The government bringing in foreign labor is a sure way to lose your country.
You mean companies actually have to consider people that want to work, but dont meet their absurd requirements to have a 5 year degree and 20 years of experience when the damn job is 99% learned through simple training? Or that people that served their time, and are on the straight and narrow should actually be given a shot?
Semi disclaimer, I'm 71 and retired last month, mom is 93 and retired for 20 years.

Middle aged anything with technical degrees and experience. We are seen as too e pensive (old) and ignored. 3 rejection letters last week, one this morning.
