Children are being euthanized in Belgium

Deliberately taking a small child’s life is unlawful everywhere in the world, even when the child is terminally ill and asks a doctor to end his or her suffering once and for all.

There is an exception to this rule: Belgium. In 2014, that country amended its law on euthanasia, already one of the most permissive in the world, authorizing doctors to terminate the life of a child, at any age, who makes the request.

For a year after the law passed, no one acted on it. Now, however, euthanasia for children in Belgium is no longer just a theoretical possibility.

Between Jan. 1, 2016, and Dec. 31, 2017, Belgian physicians gave lethal injections to three children under 18, according to a July 17 report from the commission that regulates euthanasia in Belgium.

*** We do know the 11-year-old euthanized last year had cystic fibrosis. This congenital respiratory disease is incurable and fatal, but modern treatments enable many patients to enjoy high quality of life well into their 30s or even beyond. Median life expectancy for new CF cases in the United States is now 43 years, according to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

This makes me ill. I am sure the bureaucrats are happy to kill as many children as possible as it saves $$$ that would have been spent on socialized medical care. An MD degree does not make you God.

Adults? I am quite in favor of this. If my dog has incurable cancer and is in pain, we are “merciful “ and provide a relatively quick and painless death.

It if I am slowly dying of Pancreatic cancer, in pain with no hope of recovery - I must suffer until I die. Why? Because someone completely unrelated and uninvolved in my life decides my fate. I disagree. I, and I alone, should be the only one to decide my fate.

Belgium has been an oddly sick society for a long, long time. The atrocities in the Belgian Congo in the 1800s are an example. More recently, they’ve had big government sex scandals and child murder scandals. For a small place, they manage to squeeze in a lot of evil.

I wish someone would find this clip. There was a movie I saw several years ago where the main character was at an elitist dinner party (maybe Germany?) The woman who spoke said the disabled should be euthenized because of the cost to “the state”. If anyone can help...let me know. Was it “Chaplin”? I’ve searched but can’t find.

There are unintended consequences tied into this law. About a year ago, I read a piece where a guy within the prison system of Belgium (who is basically there on a life sentence) asked for the euthanization service because he couldn’t cope with life in prison for the remainder of his life. That got the pro-folks stirred up because they didn’t want a trend to start up and literally dozens of Belgium prisoners requesting as their way out in life.
