On Friday District Judge Amit P. Mehta upheld BuzzFeed’s motion to compel the U.S. government to answer questions about the infamous Christopher Steele dossier. BuzzFeed published the dossier in January 2017. At the time, it reportedly proved collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, and contained allegations about a “pee-pee tape.” The dossier’s allegations were unverified and relied on political opposition research.
Aleksej Gubarev sued the Internet news outlet for defamation because the dossier included a paragraph that falsely said his company Webzilla was plotting to breach the Democratic Party’s cybersecurity. BuzzFeed is claiming “fair report privilege,” which grants protection for news outlets publishing “fair and accurate” reports on government action.
BuzzFeed originally issued seven subpoenas in June 2017, asking for testimony and documents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Central Intelligence Agency, Department of Justice, and Office of the Director for National Intelligence (ODNI), as well as from former FBI director James Comey. former director of national intelligence James Clapper, and former CIA director John Brennan.
The intelligence agencies rejected all of those requests, stating that they weren’t relevant to the case, required undue burden for the government, and compromised the current investigation into Russian collusion. BuzzFeed then narrowed its subpoena drastically, asking instead for answers to three questions.

How would it affect Buzzfeed’s defense if they admitted receiving the dossier from Ali Watkins via James Wolfe of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence? (I presume SSCI possessing it would not prove it was legit or government endorsed.)

I think the time line isn’t right.
Buzzfeed already had the dossier.
Buzzfeed released the dossier in jan. 2017.
SSCI got the the FISA March 2017 - same day Wolfe fed Watkins.
The dossier and the FISA application are two different things. My theory is that James Wolfe received the dossier from Senator John McCain, who as former chairman, and then emeritus member of the SSCI, knew and worked with James Wolfe, who fed it to Watkins, who worked for Buzzfeed. McCain as the source fits the timeline, and I could see him giving a copy to SSCI.
Casting doubt on my theory is the number of pages BuzzFeed published versus the number McCain supposedly turned over to the FBI. I need to research that further. Things I saw yesterday on the internet put BuzzFeed at 35 and McCain at 33. I don’t trust the sources and intend to look further and “older”.

We know of 3 different versions in MSM land and it is my understanding that at any given time there were up to 17 different versions of the dossier by Steele. How many different versions were floating around in MSM land? Who knows ?

I’m guessing that might be one of the reasons MSM wouldn’t touch reporting on the dossier.
I don’t know how much you trust The Hill’s solomon reporting. but most of this stuff is documented via Strozk’s testimony.
