Russia warns of 'horrible' conflict if Georgia joins NATO

MOSCOW – An attempt by NATO to incorporate the former Soviet republic of Georgia could trigger a new, "horrible" conflict, Russia's prime minister said Tuesday in a stern warning to the West marking 10 years since the Russia-Georgia war.

Dmitry Medvedev said in an interview with the Kommersant daily broadcast by Russian state television that NATO's plans to eventually offer membership to Georgia are "absolutely irresponsible" and a "threat to peace."

Medvedev was Russia's president during the August 2008 war, which erupted when Georgian troops tried unsuccessfully to regain control over the Moscow-backed breakaway province of South Ossetia and Russia sent troops that routed the Georgian military in five days of fighting.

The Russian army was poised to advance on the Georgian capital, but Medvedev rolled it back, accepting a truce mediated by the European Union.

After the war, Georgia entirely lost control of both South Ossetia and another separatist region, Abkhazia. Russia has strengthened its military presence in both regions and recognized them as independent states, but only a few countries have followed suit.

The European Union on Tuesday reiterated its "firm support to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognized borders" and lamented the Russian military presence in Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

In a show of support for Georgia, foreign ministers of Latvia, Lithuania and Poland, and a Cabinet member from Ukraine, visited Tbilisi Tuesday, urging Russia to withdraw its troops from Abkhazia and South Ossetia. "Nowadays no country can change the borders of another country by force," said Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz.

The US must leave the dumbasses in NATO immediately.

It's like being allies with a crack head. Rather, a bunch of crack heads.

NATO might expand into the Republic of Georgia. So who’s right, my Uncle Wally or Frederick the Great?

Only around ten percent of the people of Georgia are Muslim.

Almost 90% are Eastern Orthodox.

‘Horrible Conflict’ with what?

They’re bogged down in Ukraine and Syria and what’s left of their forces is a Cold War flea market.

...Russia sent troops that routed the Georgian military in five days of fighting...

So how many American NATO lives is Georgia worth?

I’m no apologist for Russia, particularly Putin, but my family origins are Russian.

This constant expansion of NATO, encroaching on Russian borders with weapons and mutual defense agreements, is an astoundingly insensitive and bad idea. The US has little or no historical sensitivity to this kind of encroachment, though we threatened nuclear war when the USSR placed missiles in Cuba. But Russia, who has significant reason to fear or at least be very wary of foreign encroachment near its borders, is expected to just go along with this. It is a very poor idea, it is poking Russia in the eye, and they are bound to react by upping their defenses and probably offensive capability as well. This is exactly what we have seen, pretty much since the NATO entreaties to the Ukraine. It’s just a stupid, provocative idea that does little except raise tensions and stimulate arms sales.

If NATO admits Georgia, Russia will launch nukes.

What has hit a real nerve with Moscow is not Georgia, but Armenia - which had its velvet revolution in April, ousting Kremlin puppets, and arresting its former pro-Russia president. Armenia doesn’t even have a desire to join NATO.

It's not bad if you toss out Atlanta and Macon.

“It’s just a stupid, provocative idea “

I cannot understand the goals of the Neoconservatives on this.

They must hate themselves and desire suicide. And they want to take everyone with them.

“If NATO admits Georgia, Russia will launch nukes.”

If that is true, Russia is a rouge state and should be met with equal preemptive force in addition to severing all diplomatic relations and trade.

Its funny that the muslim percentage is higher in Russia than in Europe. In fact Moscow has the largest Muslim community in Europe: about one million Muslim residents

What nukes? The Russians haven't conducted a test since Soviet days.

Their military is broke and their ICBM tests have been iffy at best for years.

Sorry, no. I am not for mindless zombie NATO expansion but I am sick of the narrative that NATO is to blame for Russia’s childish antics. If you experience daily life in any of thee bordering countries, you will know that Russia has maintained invasive posture even following the so-called collapse of the Soviet Union. It dominates the fabric of people’s lives, preventing their little countries from re-finding their identities and independence again.

When Estonia wanted to remove a Soviet statue for example, ethnic Russians in the country threw a violent fit and riots on the streets - and the Estonian government’s systems were all hacked.

Putin and his state media/propaganda machine also have a thing for nuclear bomb videos and carelessly talking up the prospects of WWIII. They put on theatrical war games close to border with Scandinavia so that even pacifist Sweden and Norway take notice...they also hold nuclear emergeny/shelter drills for their people as a way to distract Russians from their own domestic woes.

Are you contending Russia cannot deliver nukes to the US in great numbers? Like more than 500 in less than an hour?

If so, what data do you base that contention upon?

Or is it just a feeling?
