Why the Left Is So Afraid of Jordan Peterson
theatlantic.com ^ | Caitlin Flanagan

Two years ago, I walked downstairs and saw one of my teenage sons watching a strange YouTube video on the television.

“What is that?” I asked.

He turned to me earnestly and explained, “It’s a psychology professor at the University of Toronto talking about Canadian law.”

“Huh?” I said, but he had already turned back to the screen. I figured he had finally gotten to the end of the internet, and this was the very last thing on it.

That night, my son tried to explain the thing to me, but it was a buzzing in my ear, and I wanted to talk about something more interesting. It didn’t matter; it turned out a number of his friends—all of them like him: progressive Democrats, with the full range of social positions you would expect of adolescents growing up in liberal households in blue-bubble Los Angeles—had watched the video as well, and they talked about it to one another.

The boys graduated from high school and went off to colleges where they were exposed to the kind of policed discourse that dominates American campuses. They did not make waves; they did not confront the students who were raging about cultural appropriation and violent speech; in fact, they forged close friendships with many of them. They studied and wrote essays and—in their dorm rooms, on the bus to away games, while they were working out—began listening to more and more podcasts and lectures by this man, Jordan Peterson.

Peterson never comments directly on political events and doesn’t reveal anything about his economic beliefs nor does he declare he’s one thing or the other.

The left doesn’t like him because he describes, psychologically and scientifically, what exactly is wrong with SJWs thinking, and the evil of post-modern social sciences.

So he’s really attacking the philosophical basis for most Leftist thought, and does so very intelligently and logically.

The Left isn’t afraid of Peterson, he’s literally being promoted by the media.

He’s a controlled opposition outlet meant to act as a release valve over the SJW “mind your pronouns” garbage.

Reason to buy his books. I have two of them.

The Jordan Peterson phenomenon hit critical mass with the Cathy Newman interview. It was my first exposure to him. If you’ve not seen it, search it on google.

He is killing it because he says what he means and destroys literally anyone who tries to disagree with him. Love his videos.

Incredible that an article like this made it into the pages of the Atlantic. Jordan Peterson is at once emotionally inspiring and intellectually profound. A good combination!

It’s interesting that the Atlantic (and Daily Beast for that matter) do at times publish fine articles.

Peterson never comments directly on political events and doesn’t reveal anything about his economic beliefs nor does he declare he’s one thing or the other.

Much of his power as a thinker comes from the fact that he isn't a partisan. He just lets the facts speak for themselves.

Actually, facts and common sense aren't partisan either. And he is using them to destroy all kinds of stupid human thought.

It just so happens that the great preponderance of stupid thought comes from the left.

Bullseye.

He does it very well.

“The Left isn’t afraid of Peterson, he’s literally being promoted by the media.”

Exactly. “Wrecking SJW’s” on YouTube isn’t exactly a counter-revolution, is it? Cleaning up your room won’t stop the slide into degeneracy.

It is attacking the roots of the left. Peterson believes in objective truth.

The very basis of leftist thought is that truth is subjective.

A belief in truth leads to Christ. At least it did for me.

Thanks kingu ... this almost reminds me of the day I discovered Rush Limbaugh in 1989 ... I was on my lunch break and went out to my car to tune in a Yankees game on WABC radio, but instead of the Yankees there was this guy talking stuff which I'd never heard before on any radio broadcast, stuff which I agreed with.

Rush was made possible by repeal of the so-called "Fairness Doctrine" (thank you President RR), which was a wholly unconstitutional suppression of free speech, which the Left are still trying to revive to this day. They can't win in the marketplace of ideas so they have to suppress that which goes against their quest for tyranny.

... I'm rambling here, but you get the gist of what I'm saying ....

Does anyone agree that Peterson is sowing feelings, but not logical progression to a principle from which to reason?

Is that Jungian?

OK, I haven’t read the rest of the article, which I will now do, but I REALLY like the way this is starting.

If you’re a FReeper, and don’t know about JBP, you need to fix that.

Some good starting points. Worth the time.

There really is no philosophical basis for Leftist thought. They all seek to impose their wish lists on others. There is nothing philosophical in that. The contrast to the structured arguments of the Founding Fathers--premised on generations of experience--could not be more compelling:

Consider: America: Grounded On Experience & Reason.
