The 1986 Plastic Gun Panic
Reason ^ | 08/07/18 | David Kopel

Have you heard about the "undetectable plastic gun"? The gun control lobbies call it is "tailor-made for terrorism." The Washington Post reports that a state sponsor of terrorism is already attempting to obtain these guns. A Post columnist warns that the police "vehemently oppose the introduction of plastic guns into our armed society." Newsweek predicts the NRA will face a member revolt for opposing legislation to ban plastic guns: "This time the gun lobby may have shot itself in the foot."

The above is not today's news. It's the news from 1985 to 1988, the years of the first plastic gun panic. The supposed "plastic gun" was the Glock pistol, which contains more than a pound of metal, and is easily identified by metal detectors.

Today, millions of Americans own Glock pistols, and they are widely recognized as among the most common and ordinary of handguns. But back in 1985, the Glock was brand new, and the gun control lobbies found a brand new opportunity to terrify the American public. Many politicians and much of the press were eager to embrace the panic. Congress came close to enacting a wide-ranging gun ban.

This article tells the story of the first plastic gun panic.

The origins of the first plastic gun

In 1963, Gaston Glock, an Austrian engineer, created the Glock company. The Glock factory was near Vienna, in Deutsch-Wagram. It manufactured plastic and steel products, including curtain rings. After developing expertise in products combining plastic with steel, Glock became an Austrian army supplier field knives, machine gun belts, practice hand grenades, plastic clips, and entrenching tools.

In the early 1980s, the Austrian army asked a wide variety of manufacturers to submit bids to manufacture a new duty pistol.

Plastic gun - guaranteed to fire the first time it’s used. Be sure to hold it at arms length, and wear protective gear.

Call me old fashioned, but I still want a metal chamber and barrel.

Something like a super engineered carbon fiber or shatter resistant ceramic might hold up too, but this isn’t the kind of plastic found in kiddie toys, the newfangled 3D printers, and the like. At any rate, the ammo cannot be plastic or it won’t do much more than a pellet gun.

I remember this “crisis” very well. In fact, it was recently after the panic surrounding the IMPENDING NEXT ICE AGE!!! (Not kidding). :(

Um, you know the article is about the panic Glock made when it was called the “plastic gun” and that claims were made that it couldn’t be detected by metal detectors, right?

When I was much younger my dad, brother and I went to Butch’s Gun Shop in Seattle. My brother asked if the Glock was made of plastic. One of the clerks took the slide off and asked “does this look like plastic?” I learned early on that when the subject was guns, the national news would go out of its way to get everything wrong.

When die hard 2 came out, i was 10.

I believed it for the night, then the next day found out about the glock handgun. While never owning one, my dad laughed at the thought of a plastic barrel.

I appreciate a well engineered firearm. Polymer and steel semi-autos are pretty decent. All steel 1911 pistols and S&W revolvers are also very nice. I have avoided the scandium frame revolvers (too light, too much felt recoil). Good sights matter too. I like Ameriglo sights on the Glock 19 Gen 5 and Glock 17 Gen 5. A 17+2 mag in the Glock 17 gives a fine grip. The S&W M&P 2.0 9mm (4.25") topped with Ameriglo SW-247 sights is a great package. Ruger's SR1911 10mm is an excellent product with a good from the factory trigger. Lots of steel providing enough mass to handle 180 gr 10mm loads. The 5 shot S&W Model 69 44mag with 4.25" barrel is excellent too. L Frame fits my hand perfectly.

Zero interest in anything with a plastic barrel. Junk and dangerous to the user.

When the Glock came out, the media covered themselves in sh*t as they deliberately spread lies and misinformation.

It was a lesson in the future of media relations that no thinking shooter will ever forget.
