Kobach agrees to recuse himself from vote counting in Kansas GOP primary

Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach (R) says he will recuse himself from vote counting in the state's unsettled Republican gubernatorial primary, where Kobach is challenging incumbent Gov. Jeff Colyer (R).

Kobach told CNN's Chris Cuomo on Thursday night that he would formally recuse himself on Friday as outstanding votes remain to be counted, but noted it was a largely "symbolic" move as the vote counting is undertaken at the county level.

"There's really no point to doing it, because the secretary of State actually has no role in the counting of provisional ballots or any recount," Kobach said. "But I said if my opponent wishes me to, I'd be happy to."

"It's purely symbolic," Kobach added in the interview. "I don't think [Colyer] understands the process."

Kobach made the announcement after Colyer accused him in a letter on Thursday afternoon of issuing guidance to state election officials “inconsistent with Kansas law” and demanded his recusal from the process.

The secretary of State's lead dropped from 191 to 91 votes earlier Thursday due to a discrepancy that officials noticed in Colyer's totals in Thomas County.

Results of the race remain unofficial, and it is still too close to call. More than 311,000 votes have been tallied but over 10,000 absentee and provisional ballots remain to be counted, CNN noted.

Kobach, who has enjoyed President Trump's backing in the heated GOP primary race, previously headed the White House's now-defunct voter fraud commission that was created to investigate Trump's unsubstantiated claims of widespread voter fraud in the 2016 election.

Wow. Colyer keeps these attacks on Kobach up, and I might not be able to bring myself to vote for him in November if he ends up winning this primary.

He pretty much had to do it. I want Kobach to win too, but what would we say if the Dems tried that?
The gap is closing up swiftly. He may have missed this one.
We’ll see. Maybe there will be another way he can serve in the Trump Administration.

I still wish Sarah Palin would be a part of this presidency too. But not in any capacity where she would have to be approved and vetted except by the President. I don’t want Sarah being Drawn and Quartered yet again. She and her family have suffered enough. Hope springs eternal, right?

How is it that the one who wins an election always loses votes in the days following, and the one who lost the election always gains votes in the days following?

I can’t think of a single instance where the reverse has occurred.

Always the bad guy wins when it’s close. Here in Arizona, Janet Napolitano has them count votes out on the reservations until she lost the original count.

Haskell County reported an error and added 30 votes for Kobach.

What makes Colyer the bad guy? Or Kobach, not sure which you're referring to?

Colyer endorsed by Bob Dole, Kobach endorsed by DJT. That makes Colyer the usual RINO Uniparty suspect.

Colyer is the repub establishment candidate. Kansas Republicans despise conservatives. That is what makes Colyer the bad guy, he is a pragmatist like the rest of them. Kobach actually has a spine.

Symbolic gesture or not, I’m betting that a Dem wouldn’t recuse under similar circumstances. Repubs nearly always fall on the sword/roll over/recuse, whether there’s a valid reason for it, or not.

Colyer also endorsed by the NRA and KFL (Kansans for Life). Is the NRA in the Uniparty as well?

The truth is, both Colyer and Kobach are fine conservatives. Either one can do the job and is light years ahead of the Commie Dem running for governor. We need to get this recount behind us and get ready for November.

The NRA will always endorse the incumbent the positions on the 2nd Amendment being the same. The NRA is effective but it is by no means the most aggressive of the PR-2 groups. It is part of the DC scene but has managed to keep itself from becoming ‘reasonable’. The most aggressive 2A group today, from what I have read, is the Second Amendment Foundation.

Why bring up Sarah? Too much of her family problems are self inflicted. White trash.

Dole endorse Trump in May of 2016, before any other former Republican nominee and after the state had rejected Trump in the Republican caucus. He's pretty much his own man.

So I guess Brownback was an establishment candidate who despised conservatives, too? So then why is he working for Trump?
