THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

JEROME KERN

CENTENNIAL SUMMER: “ALL THROUGH THE DAY”

This was another successful entry on the Hit Parade for 1946.

Arranging is such a complex discipline!

I could arrange “on the fly” using MIDI and Multi-Track recording, but to do it for REAL instruments is a whole other matter. One has to know and appreciate the timbre and range of each instrument, how much is too much and how much is not enough, with no over-dubbing, track-bouncing, doubling, or editing.

It is an awesome talent.

I LOVE this scene in Amadeus:

(I know it is a fabrication of the movie, but i like it anyway!)

I envisioned Salieri thinking, "So this is how the professionals do it."

LOL!

I used to get scores our of the library, stand in front of the Stereo, and “conduct”. My favorite was “Symphonie Fantastique” by Berlioz.

With those Voice of the Theater Speakers (utilized in Boston’s CINERAMA Theater), it was like having the whole orchestra in the living room.

I have top-of-the-line ADS speakers from 1982, and when the CD era began, I could hear the floorboards on the podium creak when the conductor gave the downbeat.

I would occasionally conduct the Sixth Symphony of Dvorak from the score, but my preference was to sing the bass choral parts of the Berlioz Requiem. I made sure no one was within hearing distance first.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

JEROME KERN

CENTENNIAL SUMMER: “ALL THROUGH THE DAY”

Everybody wanted to get in on the act. A song this good had people lining up to record it. Note that the Big Bands were going into eclipse, and solo acts were dominating the charts.

My favorite Sing-A-Long-Requiem was Verdi’s. My favorite parts were Lacrimosa and Liberara Me.

My Brother has the Voice of the Theater Speakers in his Barn (Man-Cave). I love to listen to Vinyl over there.

If I had those in my Mobile Home, my house would probably break loose from its ties and go rumbling down the street on what’s left of its wheels! :-)

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

JEROME KERN

CENTENNIAL SUMMER: “ALL THROUGH THE DAY”

This 1959 entry is from the UK, and while it is a bit heavy with strings, they don’t really get in the way of the song.
