Politican who protested Dallas NRA show pleads guilty to corruption charges

The outspoken Dallas mayor pro tem who balked at the National Rifle Association coming to town earlier this year resigned on Thursday after entering a guilty plea in federal court.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office announced that Dallas City Council Member and Mayor Pro Tem Dwaine Caraway pleaded guilty to conspiracy and tax evasion charges involving $450,000 in bribe and kickback payments stemming from securing a city school bus stop-arm camera contract for a Louisiana company. The Dallas Morning News later reported that Caraway resigned his public position in the aftermath of the revelations.

“I have dedicated much of my life to serving others, but have never claimed to be without sin,” Caraway wrote in his resignation letter. “I am truly sorry that I must end my career as an elected official because I betrayed the public’s trust that I worked so very hard to earn.”

In February, the lawmaker, a Democrat who long represented the city’s 4th District, mounted a campaign against the NRA’s planned 147th Annual Meeting, which was set to come to the publicly-owned Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center. Caraway pointed to the recent school shooting in Parkland, Florida in his call to both move the event and regulate semi-automatic firearms in Dallas.

The NRA pushed back against the councilman’s outcry, asserting the grassroots organization had always been part of the city, with thousands of members in the area. The meeting, held in May, ended up setting an all-time attendance record for the organization, with 87,154 filing through the doors.

As for Caraway, his portal on the City’s website has been scrubbed of any mention of the former Dallas fixture and his portrait has been removed from the Council’s page pending a November special election to fill his now-vacant seat. He is scheduled for sentencing in December and faces seven years in federal prison under his plea agreement.

Well, lookie here, gang! Another gun grabber, another crook. Funny how it works that way. The most hoplophobic gun control advocates tend to have serious ethical and legal issues of their own.

Re: I have dedicated much of my life to serving others

These politicians just love to tell us how much they are dedicated to serving us. Just don’t watch their hands stuffing money into their pockets and notice them serving themselves.

I have to say, when I see articles like this, the very first thing I do as a mental exercise, is to predict the party of the politician.

It is so true. If they don’t say it in the first sentence...it is a lib. 100% of the time!

I saw an article the other day about that upstate NY politician bagged for insider trading and within five words, the word “Republican” appeared, and then a bunch of times before the end of the first paragraph.

Dallas Mayor today made excuses for Carraway’s misdeeds saying it was partly due to his poor background.

He’s not sorry that he did it, just sorry he had to resign.

Got a little too accustomed to the free gibs.
