Chicago Officials Looking at Universal Basic Income Program

Officials in Chicago want to test the waters of offering a universal basic income.

A majority of city council members are telling Mayor Rahm Emanuel to form a task force to look into Universal Basic Income programs, which is essentially a periodic check from the government with no strings attached.

The City Council wants to explore a program that would send at least $500 a month to 1,000 Chicago families. The same families also would get Earned Income Tax Credit money on a monthly basis rather than once a year.

47th Ward Ald. Ameya Pawar’s resolution said the money would "help working people and families become more resilient to day-to-day financial emergencies, are able to make rent, cover childcare, and put food on the table."

At his speech for the annual Nelson Mandela lecture in Johannesburg last month, former President Barack Obama endorsed the idea of a UBI as more jobs are automated.

"We’re going to have to be more imaginative," he said. "We’re going to have to consider new ways of thinking about these problems like a universal income, a review of our work week and how we train our young people."

In other news, 1,000 families’ rent was increased by $500 because they can afford it now.

Just what the State of Illinois needs - more spending they can’t afford on something that is totally unnecessary. I have spent a lot of time in the State - many of the Chicago suburbs look tatty due to houses being under water. Taxes in the State keep rising, they have billions in unfunded state pensions and what does some nitwit propose - giving away more money! Makes sense.

PhDs and other morons...they still think it will work... fact they actually think this will work tells you exactly how little they think of people to think that they don’t need self esteem they don’t need pride and ownership and that they are the ones who should be in charge and tell us exactly what to do cuz they know best the arrogance is amazing.

Just enough to win their next election.

After that it’s somebody else’s problem.

Cuckoo - Cuckoo - Cuckoo.
The cuckoo clock is now set to go off on five minute intervals. It used to go off every hour but that is only 24 crazy ideas in a day. They now have 288 crazy ideas a day and every five minutes may not be enough.

Given the property tax trick he just pulled, he may be economically stupid.

Here we go again. Obviously these idiots haven’t read my postings on this.
Ho hum. Let’s start.
First of all you don’t TEST a UNIVERSAL basic income on 1,000 families. Universal means ALL. 1,000 is not all. This should be clear and not need explaining.
Second, giving money to people for not working encourages them to not work. To be prosperous, you need to encourage productivity, not indolence. But democrats want more indolence, not productivity.
Third, if applied to all, the immediate effect is the lowering of the value of money.
Fourth, the recipients will soon be demanding $1,000, then 2, then 5, then 10, and eventually 100,000. There is no disputing this.

It’s obvious that the initial “test” will be declared a success. The recipients are not going to find anything wrong with this at all. You will see news stories about how Hilda stopped eating cat food, and can now serve her family healthy meals. You will be told that the kids no longer have to dress in rags, but can have decent clothes, etc, etc. The unfortunate suckers who don’t receive this gift won’t care. The effect on their taxes will be negligable.

I self identify as ‘1000 Chicago families.’

If they were truly worried about job loss due to automation they wouldn’t be so in favor of unskilled immigration or illegal entry.

The 16th Amendment legalized the fiscal colonoscopy that robs the productive.

Hope this does not come as a shock.

How would the city be able to mandate how EITC is disbursed?
