Thanks for the link - beautiful. Take that, gravity!

I’m still amazed that something like our sun can be so stable over so long a period of time as to permit the continuation of life forms with minimal disruption.

Compare our Sun to a red dwarf:

Each has its advantages and disadvantages.

When is it supposed to hit the sun?

It is scheduled to reach the sun at some time during the night...

Great comments. Just after liftoff, in a pause between the burns, the NASA commentator inverviewed Dr. Parker. His hand was shaking as he held the microphone.

She asked him what he thought about this mission and the launch. He said that he was excited to see what we would learn over the next 6 to 7 years. He also mentioned that seeing a live launch (his first) was like the Taj Mahal: pictures really don't do it justice.

Glad he's gotten to see the launch. Hope he's around when the data comes in.

Bio: Eugene Newman Parker

The chances are there but the ability to go where they’re launching has always been the problem. Now if they’d just build a launch pad in TN or, say, Huntsville, AL, I’m good to go! LOL! It’s just too heavily-populated if something goes wrong. Darn the luck.

But what a thrill it would be to be close enough that the shaking ground and throbbing air would knock you to your knees! What a rush, huh?

Who knows what the future holds? Maybe one or both of us will get to experience the thrill of being there one day.

When is it supposed to hit the sun?

Actually, I was wondering exactly that.

The craft will be enter six orbits around Venus and the Sun, with each orbit edging closer to the Sun by using the assist from Venus.

So, what happens then? If all goes well, after the 6th orbit, might they go for 7 and get even closer to the Sun? Or, just have it crash... Venus or the Sun are the two obvious choices.
