Skip to comments.Editorial: Strong democracy needs a free press

The Boston Globe has urged newspapers across the country to publish editorials today promoting the value of a free press, and to defend it against criticisms by President Donald Trump.
Its reasonable to ask why. Its not news that a president of the United States doesnt like the news media. Most presidents dont. Thomas Jefferson, who was routinely attacked by the press of his day, once said the only truths in a newspaper were in the advertisements.
Whats disturbing today is the bitter vitriol and open contempt directed toward the news media.

What is disturbing is that the so-called American 'free press' is in open collusion with shameless coup plotters against the President of the United States , to include : Barack Obama himself ,Hillary Clinton , John Brennan , James Clapper , James Comey , Susan Rice ,Samantha Power , and a host of others , in mounting this coup . This complicity is a clear and present danger to the United States of America and a blatant attempt to facilitate the removal of a duly elected POTUS , and to defy the U.S. Constitution and the American people .
Free AND honest unbiased ... which is not what we have
So 350 “news”papers had the freedom to publish their crap opinions today. Nobody stopped them.
There has never been a more free press in the whole history of the world. The internet has arrived.
We need an honest and responsible press. Self-discipline is the free-man’s yoke. Freedom is a responsibility not a license.
We need a press free from TDS.
Nobody here denies that we need a free press. We just need a free press that does its job properly. Hammering Donald Trump 24/7, while before, their complete lack of curiosity about what Obama was up to for an entire 8 years is astounding.
Democracy is a totalitarian manifestation...not a form a freedom. 2 imams and a hillary voting slut deciding who gets to have the clitorectomy.
The propaganda media can’t even get the basics right.
What is disturbing today is the bitter vitriol and open contempt directed towards the office of the President of the United States

Democracy needs freedom of speech to have a free press. The legal system has eaten away at our freedom of speech.
The media is free to do whatever it wants.
“Democracy” does not look pleasingly upon Freedom of any kind.
Thank God we are a Republic!
Free and honest and not biased and not anti-American and not evil is fine. The group in power now is despicable.
Out of curiousity, did a single one of the individually composed 350 editorials allegedly defending the free press have any objection to, or even make mention of, the coordinated censorship against Infowars?
The Hive has spoken.
I can only add DITTO to every post here.
A biased media is what we have. Shameful!
But the press must be unbiased and honest.
Yes, a free and open press is important to our country, but that is not what we have. It is free, even though they don’t think it is. They are free to publish their biased fake news; they are free to not cover the good real news about what is happening; and, they are free to mix their ideology with actual news and claim they are not biased. But that is not enough, their definition of free and open is that they can publish anything they want and have no backlash. President Trump and conservatives are just supposed to take it. It is because they are not honest and don’t provide the American people real news rather than their propaganda that they are indeed the enemy of the American people. The fact that they did this coordinated “hit job” on the President only serves to prove what he is saying — they are fake news outlets, they are conspiring against his administration because it endangers their leftist ideology, and they can’t be trusted to provide unbiased, none-fake news.
