A Cardinal who was heavily criticised for his handling of child sexual abuse allegations in the Pennsylvania grand jury report has withdrawn from a scheduled appearance at the World Meeting of Families in Dublin next week, it has been confirmed.

Cardinal Donald Wuerl, the Archbishop of Washington, was due to give the keynote address, entitled “The Welfare of the Family is Decisive for the Future of the World,” in the RDS at 2.30pm next Wednesday.

No reason has been provided for the decision.

Cardinal Wuerl was bishop of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, from 1988 to 2006. The report of the grand jury, which was published on Tuesday, found “wholesale institutional failure that endangered the welfare of children” in Pittsburgh.

Paladin2, Evil per say is not just for the other Evil doers. Part of the thrill of being Evil is the destruction of whatever may be Good and Right. That is why Good must always be vigilant though it fails to be vigilant. Evil is always looking for Innocents to destroy and ways to further Evil. That’s why Evil can make inroads through society so easily. Good refuses to accept it’s an ongoing battle and Evil refuses to back up. Unfortunately. Simplistic explanation, I understand. When discussing this with my beloved I constantly say Sinning is about stepping sideways because going forward can be fought more clearly. People don’t seem to want to fight something going sideways as it’s not deemed as dangerous, when it most certainly is... dangerous.

For him to be giving a talk about the welfare of the family, it's like having the fox come in to address the hens in the henhouse, telling them how to protect the henhouse.   I'm glad he's out -- now he should be forced to face severe civil & ecclesiastical justice (no matter how old he is).

I’m willing to stipulate that I am in many ways naive...

Of all the recent dioceses exposed, Pittsburgh was the worst. Actual pedo rings gone wild. Manufacturing and sharing their porn. Isn’t that a Federal offense? Wuerl can go to Hell...on the express train!

What is going to happen to our children? The evil in our leadership is making it so difficult for the to remain proud to be Catholic.

I’ve bee praying for 40 years that my husband would convert. Why would he ever consider it when he hears about how craven some of our priests are? My heart is broken.

The Diocese of Pittsburgh, having sown the wind, is now reaping the Wuerlwind.

Many of them do, and it’s a huge part of the problem. The homosexually active cleric is not only much more likely to be an abuser but also because of his own compromised position is less likely to report or discipline his fellow reprobates lest his own vice be exposed. Catholics, including me, are just sick and tired of these pervs and their apologists. We want them OUT. Period. Unfortunately, we lost an ally when Benedict XVI quit. The Gay Mafia is calling the shots now.

In a just world this evil man would finish out his sordid life behind bars.

This sick behavior could be practically solved by permitting priests and nuns to marry. If you still want to be a celibate, fine. But this evil MUST end.
