W.Va. Senate Race May Hinge on Trump's Coattails
Real Clear Politics ^ | August 22, 2018

For years, the most popular politician in West Virginia, hands down, was Joe Manchin. Twice elected governor, the centrist Democrat is now running for re-election as the Mountain State’s senior senator.

In 2016, however, Manchin’s mantle was passed to Donald Trump, who carried the state by 42 percentage points over Hillary Clinton. The president remains nearly as popular today as he was on the last Election Day, and as the West Virginia Senate race approaches the post-Labor Day home stretch, the question is whether the Trump mystique will be enough to send Manchin into early retirement.

He delivered a clear message on Tuesday during his sixth visit to the state as president -- and one unlikely to work in Manchin’s favor as he extolled the incumbent’s opponent, Republican Attorney General Patrick Morrisey. The president said at a rally in Charleston that a vote for Morrisey is a vote for his own agenda and a vote for Manchin is a vote for Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.

I’m afraid the Mountaineers don’t know Manchin’s Senate voting record.

To borrow from a country song lyric, when you’re lookin’ at Manchin, you’re lookin’ at Schumer. I’d say he’s done.

The Rats are going to play the Morrisey is not a native son card hard. I also have heard that Morrisey’s wife is a DC lobbyist and keeps a house in NoVa that card will be played negatively. (Heard about Morrisey’s wife being a lobbyist 2nd hand but I trust the source!)

The mistake this year was not putting a full effort into flipping Manchin. For one thing it would have been cheaper and easier than beating him in an election.

If Manchin loses, it will be a landslide night for President Trump all across America. However President Trump can still have a great night even with a Manchin victory. If the election were held today, Manchin would probably win.

They do.. they also know he co authored the most anti 2A legislation in the obama era. They are for sale, even after union slavery was defeated. I live there for quite some time, reading about manchins gun grabber fantasies.
He has quite a few fans here too.

Ads to that effect have been playing for a while. Especially the Brett Baer harangue from the debate. And as for sending Manchin into "early" retirement, he'll be 71 on Friday...say goodnight, Joe.

...not sure Morrissey's gonna make it though.

After a 30 year absence I just move back to the Mountain State. I tried to keep some political tabs through my family that remained here.

yeah I am not sure that Morrisey has what it takes to beat Manchin. Manchin ties go way deep here. I’ll be voting against him. So that’s one vote may there be many more!

Manchin for his many flaws is a good retail politician, he can put on the "aww shucks country boy" act really well come election time. He also has been running ads non-stop saying Morrisey is "not one of us" (he's from New Jersey). That stuff plays surprisingly well in West Virginia.

I'm not saying by any means the election is a done deal, but Morrisey really needs to get out there and start campaigning hard and hope Manchin does something stupid like vote against Kavanaugh...

Manchin ties go way deep here.

I just got here 16 years ago. Thought Manchin was a decent governor compared to what I had seen for the previous 57 years in NY.

Wholebunchalotta "Captain of the Ship of State" certificates still out there.

Actually my late father would say this about Manchin, “Yes he was a decent governor. He actually believed that businesses had a right to exist.” His point being highly unusual views for a WV Rat. Still my father had little use for him but in those that was the best you got for a Rat.

My father was on the state GOP executive committee, I remember committee meeting in our house when I was a kid. It seemed like all the WV GOP’ers were in our living room.

Well let’s see a flash poll last night had Morrissey tied with him at 45 which means 10 points of undecided which is not going to Joe; Trump will be back to the state where he won by 42 points so No Joe will lose on his own and Trump will kick him down the stairs. The people who are writing these articles are whistling past the graveyard. Every indication points to a big night for Republicans. Democrats have nothing but hate to offer voters and that won’t be Trump who will make this about him and he always wins.

I agree. It’s would have been a fine coup to flip Manchin, but apparently his colleagues like McConnell had no interest in bolstering the party.

It seemed like all the WV GOP’ers were in our living room.

They most likely were. After 80 plus democrat rule, being a Republican has been something of a rarity. If you were a Republican you simply shrugged and stayed home because you knew your vote was not going to be counted. What happened? It was the Tea Party and the Swamp that threatened our nation. We finally got ourselves together and started to fight on the home front. Then Trump sealed it. It’s been like the sunshine after the storm. WV has been rescued. Now we have to hold it.

That didn’t read quite right. Ha. 80 plus years. And it was the condition of the Swamp that set off the Tea Party and then came Trump. Sort of a simple version.

Right now, Morrisey is getting walloped on the airwaves by both Citizens United-type orgs *and* official Manchin campaign spots. “Outmanned & outgunned” one might say.

PACs have spots doing the dirty work on Morrisey, bringing up the carpetbagger and Big Pharma aspects. The official Manchin spots take cues from the “Morning in America” 1984 Reagan campaign.

In these, Manchin is, “Aw shucks, those rascawally Dems & Pubbies just can’t get along. I’ll fix that, keep me there in the Senate.”

Never mind he’s become a creature of the swamp himself — taking money from Bloomberg & playing games with Supreme Court nomination votes.
