Thousands of Amazon workers receive food stamps, and Bernie Sanders wants Amazon to pay up
MSN "News" ^ | 24 August 2018 | Abha Bhattarai

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) will soon introduce legislation that would require large employers like Amazon, Walmart and McDonald’s to fully cover the cost of food stamps, public housing, Medicaid and other federal assistance received by their employees. The goal, he says, is to force corporations to pay a living wage and curb roughly $150 billion in taxpayer dollars that currently go to funding federal assistance programs for low-wage workers each year.

The bill, which Sanders plans to introduce in the Senate on Sept. 5, would impose a 100 percent tax on government benefits received by workers at companies with 500 or more employees. For example, if an Amazon employee receives $300 in food stamps, Amazon would be taxed $300.

“At a time of massive wealth and income inequality, the gap between the very rich and everyone else continues to grow wider," Sanders said.

---------------------------------------

Amazon spokeswoman Melanie Etches said the figures were “misleading because they include people who only worked for Amazon for a short period of time and/or who chose to work part-time,” she said in a statement. “We have hundreds of full-time roles available, however, some prefer part-time for the flexibility or other personal reasons.”

In some ways I agree but also wonder why people who work are on Food Stamps in the first place? Then again, part-timers should not be included.

People went part-time to avoid Obamacare requirements

I just lowered my TAXABLE income and cost of living so that I didn’t have to pay the penalty. It was easy. At age 64, Obamacare is so expensive that you can actually make descent money and still not have to pay a penalty

Well, the mandate has been rescinded. Those folks can buy their own food. This has nothing to do with Amazon. Other than Amazon makes a great target for a cash grab.

Which is why they don’t want you firing people except for extreme cases of whatever, and are pro-union which make it even more difficult.

Hey! Bernie, you stupid idiot! Who do you think wrote the laws for distributing food stamps? While we're at it, I'm really tired of you and others of your ilk saying: "The rich don't pay their fair share?" That's true: The top 10% of wage earners foot 72% of all tax receipts...actually, they deserve a tax cut, as they are the bottom line for what drives this economic engine. Oh, BTW, you bitch about the tax laws being unfair. Who do you think wrote/approved the Tax Code? You're an absolute idiot.

Any full time workers on stamps? Must be embarrassing to the company but they have no sense of shame. Another article yesterday suggested the rural public was subsidizing their electric bills. Trump will deal with it.

Reminds me of a conversation I had with a relative some years ago when she was complaining about this very thing.

RELATIVE: "That Wal-Mart they built in town is a disgrace. They pay their workers so little, these people end up on food stamps and other public assistance."

ME: "Are you suggesting these people would not be on food stamps and other public assistance if the Wal-Mart was never built there?"

and corporations, including left wing run corps like Amazon, gave people 28 hour work weeks to avoid having to provide employees with health care via obamacare requirements...

Yeah, I agree. That was my point. People who work are on food stamps? So, if you don’t make enough, find another job or work two part-time jobs.

Not trying to be cruel, but dang it, the fedgov is deep in debt and I’m helping pay taxes. I’d like to see the money going out reduced as much as possible without hurting people who are REALLY in need.

I think that’s only about 5-10% of those on assistance.

Now having said that, the story comes to MSN from the WashPo.

Both Amazon and WashPo are owned by Jeff Bezos. Frankly, I’m glad when bad things happen to this guy, in a shadenfreude kind of way. Funny how his so-called newspaper writes a story about his business.

Stop with the illegals—and Amazon will have to pay more for their low-skill workers.

Problem solved.

It probably means the threshold for receiving the food stamps is wrong. Which in turn means that socialists have a conflict of interest on this issue. If they do whatever they want, which is give away free stuff to buy voters, then they also get to claim employers are underpaying because “Look, half their employees qualify for food stamps, the greedy bastards!”. So they shouldn’t be able to make this claim, because they can control both sides of the equation.

If you have a low-skill single mother with a few kids, it is very difficult to pay her above the level at which she’d be eligible for food stamps.

I believe it is now a majority of the children in this country who live in households receiving some such sort of government assistance.

In Ohio, the food stamp eligibility income is
Household Size* Maximum Income Level (Per Year)
1 $15,782
2 $21,398
3 $27,014
4 $32,630
5 $38,246
6 $43,862
7 $49,478
8 $55,094

*For households with more than eight people, add $5,616 per additional person.

So with a big family you could make over $26/hour. Although it might be illegal, companies would definitely aim at hiring singles or people with small families.
