Ever since, McCain has added compelling details at key points in his political career. When his stories are placed beside documented evidence from other sources, significant contradictions often emerge. One such case involves McCain’s experience in the devastating fire and explosions that killed 134 sailors on the aircraft carrier USS Forrestal during the Vietnam War three months before he was shot down over North Vietnam. McCain has made claims about this accident that differ dramatically from parts of the official Navy report and accounts of reliable eyewitnesses.

No it has not. What is debunked is that he didn’t fire the Zuni missile. That came from a Phantom II. McCain did make it worse while saving his skin. Then he left the ship as they dealt with the aftermath.
That is a fact.

If he purposely wet start his engine (a thing wiseguy pilots did to piss of pilots behind them) and the wet start caused the rocket to ignite, then he did cause it.

There were no "pilots behind him" as this diagram of the planes on the deck makes clear. He was in #416.

McCain sits on stool and explains he thought it was best to stay below and shake the hands of the boys rather than go up top and fight to save the ship.
Many rolled out of bunks in nothing but boxers and bare feet
McCain chose to shake hands below while wearing a nomex flight suit and boots.

Sorry some of that is not true. This has been debunked here on FR within the last 2 or 3 years in detail.
That missile did not come from McCain’s plane and he wasn’t trying to wet start his plane. That missile was an accident nothing more.
Now it is true McCain was shipped out right after the incident probably more due to the fact he was so despised by the officers and crew and his CO just used this accident as a excuse to transfer him out.

His transfer might also have had something to do with the fact that the Forrestal was no longer a functioning aircraft carrier.

It’s not true. Pilots were never part of fire suppression teams onboard Navy vessels.
Snopes has tried very hard, but in my estimation, failed by omission; responding to some charges and totally ignoring others.
That is not the sharpest fact checking site currently available.
I am active working on getting a copy of the official Navy report on the Forrestal incident, and McCain's role in the 160-death disaster...
