Trump’s preliminary deal with Mexico is better for workers on both sides of the border ...
Washington Post ^ | Aug 28, 2018 | Jared Bernstein

... Turning to labor standards, I find nothing in the TPP that comes close to the 75 percent regional auto content, including parts, up from about 62.5 percent under NAFTA. TPP’s auto content rules were set at 45 percent, meaning most of the value of a vehicle could be sourced from China and still have obtained TPP treatment.

An even greater standards improvement is the requirement in the U.S.-Mexico deal for $16 an hour pay for 45 percent of auto-production content and 40 percent of auto parts content; that’s about four times what Mexican auto parts workers currently make and twice the earnings of those in Mexican auto assembly plants.

And unlike the TPP’s weak labor chapter and NAFTA’s entirely unenforceable labor side agreement, the United States and Mexico have agreed to labor standards that union folks consider excellent. This includes a new commitment in the agreement by Mexico to ensure secret-ballot votes by workers at a facility to choose unions and approve contracts. This would mean the end to the scourge of the endemic Mexican “protection” unions, which sign low-wage contracts with the boss before the first worker is hired.

Trump is working hard for the working men and women, union and non-union. I love his backing on U.S. manufacturing. Though I was in a fairly secure manufacturing environment (aerospace/defense), the outsourcing initiatives that began in the 1980’s eroded a ton of what we used to do right here at home.

This is rich. All of there rules are totally unenforceable and will be abused like the H-1B visa program. It is all smoke and mirrors. Sorry but if the WaPo likes then it means that it is not going to change the status quo.

The "honor" system? Right.......

Nobody in the working/blue collar world is impressed with any of this. WHAT WAS WANTED WAS A TARIFF AND A WALL.

This does not help the Republicans in the fall. I hope it doesn't hurt them.....

Too bad we couldn’t get a tariff instead of more unenforceable rules.

I hate to say it but you’re probably right. When I read it I thought if the Mexican government could put a leash on the cartel connected unions they already would have. I hope we are wrong. Mexico needs this but I think it is too corrupt to truly reform anything.

A first year cost accountant can figure out the wage cost portion of parts or cars.

Not a perfect deal.

I don’t expect him to cut perfect deals.
That’s unrealistic. I expected him to cut
better deals, which he has.

Indeed , hell may be freezing over.

You are wrong on this and one of the most negative posters on FR.

You need an attitude adjustment.

This is NOT a vote getter in November for R's.

I hope it doesn't hurt them.

What the blue collar/Reagan Democrats see is another unenforceable trade deal and a screw job. What they wanted was a border tax and/or tariff. This will not be a vote getter for Republicans in November. Hopefully it doesn't hurt them.

I tell the truth and if you view that is negative then that says a lot about YOU.

Are you a blue collar demonRAT?

What gives you the knowledge of what blue collar demonRATs believe and how they will act.

A lot of my friends are Union workers and still registered demonRATs, and love this Mexico/US trade deal because it means more US Union jobs.

Your truth is only your opinion.

My observations are based on personal friendships and knowledge.

It does say a lot about me.

that is truly brilliant:

1. Improves relative U.S. labor competitiveness

2. Improves quality of life of Mexican workers

3. Reduces incentive of Mexican citizens to cross the U.S. border illegally, thereby reducing the pressures on U.S. wages

a complete carrot approach, the exact opposite of a Democrat approach, which is always stick-only ...
