There is no political necessity to keep Canada in the new NAFTA deal. If we don’t make a fair deal

There is no political necessity to keep Canada in the new NAFTA deal. If we don’t make a fair deal for the U.S. after decades of abuse, Canada will be out. Congress should not interfere w/ these negotiations or I will simply terminate NAFTA entirely & we will be far better off...

11:03 AM - 1 Sep 2018

...Remember, NAFTA was one of the WORST Trade Deals ever made. The U.S. lost thousands of businesses and millions of jobs. We were far better off before NAFTA - should never have been signed. Even the Vat Tax was not accounted for. We make new deal or go back to pre-NAFTA!

When has a (cough, cough) GOP politician been this brave?

Refreshing change - out with BS diplomatic niceties which somehow always end up hurting the US taxpayer, and simply state the bald reality: we don’t need Canada for a new deal.

I think this issue with Canada is proof that you cannot count on Canada to do what’s best for America when Canada thinks what’s best for America conflicts with what’s best for Canada. Which is completely just from a Canadian perspective. That is, however, why the U.S can justify steel tarrifs as a national security threat...is that clear yet?

>>>Winning

Taking into account that NAFTA was the worst trade deal ever negotiated, are a few tweaks on auto content really considered winning or is it just a rebranding of the old NAFTA deal.

New NAFTA, now with 75% regional content.

You Tube has a few Canadian videos on the trade deal. They thought President was just bluffing.

There are a few that fully understand that in a trade war with the US Canada has already lost.

I don't believe it's due to bravery, which this one surely has...It's that this President has a different agenda than those in the past...This one is for America First...

We want to move towards international financial balance in the motor vehicle industry.

Canada insisted on US/Canadian financial balance in the auto trade decades ago, and got it.

Trump may have put lots of lipstick on the Clinton NAFTA pig, but it still is an ugly beast.

“why the U.S can justify steel tarrifs as a national security threat”

Europeans have tried, very successfully, to cut off drugs used by American states to humanely execute convicted murderers.

Will Europeans cut off steel to say stop a US Middle Eastern military action their millions of Muslims object to?

European elections can have narrow margins too.

As for “political necessity”, it probably is necessary to get Congressional approval.

Note, I don’t believe in treaty-based trade deals.

I believe in somewhat informal gentlemanly understandings backed by Congressionally and foreign government passed laws.

We shouldn’t set into legal concrete for six to 16 years modest improvements in the enormous trade imbalances that have devastated the former industrial heart of the USA.

Long-term really bad deals aren’t much better than awful deals.
