No Deal! Trade Talks with Canada Conclude for the Week with No Agreement

U.S. and Canadian officials have concluded the latest round of trade talks without reaching an agreement.

The U.S. is moving ahead with the trade agreement it reached with Mexico, according to the Trump administration. Talks with Canada are expected to resume next week.
“Today the President notified the Congress of his intent to sign a trade agreement with Mexico – and Canada, if it is willing – 90 days from now,” U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said.

“We know that a win-win-win agreement is within reach,” Canadian foreign minister Chrystia Freeland said in a press conference Friday. “The government of Canada will not sign an agreement unless it is good for Canadians.”

But but but their top diplomat was awarded the Diplomat of the Year award!

Treudo is going to cost Canada their Automobile production. He singlehandedly is going to bring down Canada, but very proudly!

If Trudeau does not want a fair trade deal, he will get no deal.
It’s outrageous Canada puts 300% tariffs on our dairy products.
Very unfair to our dairy farmers.
Trudeau has a choice.
He can anger 15,000 Canada dairy farners.
Or anger 190,000 Canadian auto related workers
who will lose their jobs, when plants start moving
back to the U.S.
His choice.

We shouldn’t have to buy our friends, indeed, particularly when they gain so much from our friendship.

US auto manufacturers need to relocate their Canadian factories back to the USA. A 25% tariff on Canadian made vehicles should be sufficient incentive to do just that.

He may think his party and government can weather this. Australia’s leftists survived killing their entire motor industry, after all.

So far.

I just read article from cinsevative treehouse saying there isn’t likely to be a deal at all, that way a lot of Canadian business moves to usa (carmakimg)

One item needing to be mentioned is that a lot of those plants up here produce vehicles that are already marginal in the modern marketplace, like US badged sedans (which with a few exceptions sell about as well as free venerial disease). Some of them are slated to be canceled without replacement. So it might not be a matter of moving plants (which could eventually be moved back) but just shuttering them. Bit of a difference.

He may.
But there would be a lot of Americans delighted to have those
jobs back here in the States.

Er, “plants up here” should be “plants up there (in Canada)”. I live in Texas, not the Far Frozen North.

See my post 13.

Ford is discontinuing all US market cars but the Mustang over the next few years and switching to an otherwise all SUV/CUV/truck line. GM is looking into doing the same because nobody wants domestic sedans any more, not in a significant and economically worthwhile to cater to number. Many of the vehicles being canned were Canadian built or had major Canuck parts.

Then you should email Trudeau and beg him to stand strong
against Trump, since you seem to think tariffs won’t hurt Canada.

Those 275% tariffs on dairy products from USA protect the Canadian dairy industry in Quebec which is the Canadian prime minister’s strong hold and keeps him in power. He is not going to give up easily.

It will require hydraulic press pressure in the form of 25% tariffs on every car imported from Canada to force Trudeau to acquiesce.
