After Deadly Raid, Pentagon Weighs Withdrawing Almost All Commandos From Niger

The Pentagon is considering withdrawing nearly all American commandos from Niger in the wake of a deadly October ambush that killed four United States soldiers.

Three Defense Department officials said the plans, if approved by Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, would also close military outposts in Tunisia, Cameroon, Libya and Kenya, as well as seven of the eight American elite counterterrorism units operating in Africa.

The shift in forces is part of the Pentagon’s defense strategy to focus on threats from China and Russia. But they represent a more severe cut of Special Operations forces in Africa than initially expected, leaving a lasting, robust military presence primarily in Somalia and Nigeria.

The proposal does not say that any additional troops would return to Africa even as Special Operations units gradually draw down. Officials said that could reverse progress that has been made against Al Qaeda and Islamic State affiliates, while diminishing alliances across Africa as both Russia and China move to increase their influence.

Maybe these Spec Ops units could infiltrate Mexico instead to do counter-insurgency ops against the invasion force coming across our southern border.

Best of luck to them.

We have national interests, but it is not obvious to me that our national interests in Africa justify our military operating there. We can train any honest police or military forces from Africa here, if we can find them, and then send them back.

Good. Stop meddling all over the world. We have no vital national interests in that part of Africa. Bring the boys home.

Maybe.

Like a massive parasite, they will consume the natural resources until the host is used up.

In fifty years they may still have a few friends in high places and zero concern for the remains.

The American people have no idea of the shit going on in Africa.

And hardly any of it has to do with “fighting terrorism.” It has to do with securing access to resources.

War is a racket. And the US acts like the friggin mafia, with JSOC as the enforcers. It is a criminal misuse of our military.

These nations are not threatening us mlitarily, although we certainly need to be prepared for the worst. China’s biggest threat is the influence that its money buys. The Russian hacking threat is a joke — our own big tech is more of a menace to our freedom.

The Chinese need Africa's mineral resources. They do not need the Africans -- they have plenty of Chinese.

In the beginning, they will use Africans to kill any troublesome Africans, then complete the process by performing ethnic cleansing of Africans from the areas they wish to dominate.
