East Austin activists push to create a new school district

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Advocates say the Austin Independent School District is not doing enough to help Black and Latino students succeed in east Austin schools. On Wednesday, parents and community activists released a list of demands of AISD, including allowing east Austin to form its own school district.

The group outlined three specific actions it wants from AISD:

AISD must do all in its power to improve the academic achievement of its minority students. The district is currently not doing this. The compensation and benefits for teachers of minority students, particularly those in Title I schools, must be substantially upgraded so as to support and retain good teachers. To end segregation, AISD must immediately restructure school attendance boundaries or permit east Austin to form its own school district.

Is it really the district or lack of support at home?

Education is like a three leg bar stool. 1 for the school, 1 for the community and the last for the parents. Lack of any one leg will cause the stool to fall over.

So Schools and the community can work as hard as possible but if the parents do not do their part there will be failure.

if endlessly throwing money at these issues worked for these communities, they would all be Rhodes Scholars....

these issues are symptomatic of a culture who generally looks at formal education as “punk white boy shit”

Sounds like they want another school named after the greatest Fraud ever perpetrated on our country.

Currently, Dallas is the only Texas city to have “honored” the racist foreigner POS.

Just one question ... what are the parents of these students doing to help their kids succeed?

Desegregation never works because it works AGAINST the natural propensity to self-segregate for rational reasons.

I’m embarrassingly ashamed to call Dallas my neighbor.

Complaining about racism?

Putting minority kids in with the ‘better’ kids will only improve their performance. You don’t get better playing against slugs.

Seems to me that's the student's responsibility...

On Wednesday, parents and community activists released a list of demands of AISD, including allowing east Austin to form its own school district.

I MIGHT be for yet another public school district in Texas, as long as none of the “activists” are allowed to work for it.

But ... could there be another way? Why ...

They could form their own state charter school, siphon off students and state funds, stuff the payroll with their relatives and girlfriends and then ignore the students, and complain that their parents don't support them, etc.

Not happy with Austin ISD? Then open your own state approved charter school. That's how the legislature set up the process.

They have to keep calling for more money and more programs because otherwise they would have to look at other causes. Nobody is willing to go there.

Actually I’d add a fourth leg- the student. They have to do the work and follow the rules needed to succeed, if they are not willing to do that then none of the other stuff matters.

“AISD must implement culturally responsive Restorative Justice practices”

The activists, with the above, clearly identify themselves not as primarily concerned with academic anything, and instead primarily focused on a political agenda. They want real academics subsumed below that agenda.

Well my smart aleck thought on reading the demands was “And provide husbands who are stable wage earners to single women with children.”
