(NJ) The gas tax was just raised, and it could keep going up

New Jersey's gas tax is going up this fall for the second time in two years. And all indications are that it is going to keep going up, an industry expert says.

And up. And up.

Gas tax collections have fallen behind for two years now, precipitating Gov. Phil Murphy's administration to announce Thursday that it is raising the motor fuel tax 4.3 cents, bringing state taxes on a gallon of gasoline sold in New Jersey to 41.4 cents -- the ninth-highest of any state.

This follows a whopping 23-cent-per-gallon increase passed by the state Legislature and signed into law by then-Gov. Chris Christie in 2016.

An industry expert says New Jersey is caught in a loop wherein higher gas taxes are depressing consumption, which then forces state officials to levy fresh gas taxes each fall.

"The (customer) pool is going to get smaller every year, so that means the rate is going to have to get higher every year, which is going to cause the pool to get smaller," said Sal Risalvato, executive director of the New Jersey Gasoline, C-Store, Automotive Association.

"As this point, I feel the cycle has been started and I don't have the solution to fix it."

A New Jersey treasury analyst told NJ Advance Media Friday, however, that consumption levels are returning to pre-2016 norms, and as long as they remain stable gas tax increases shouldn't be continuous.

we just can't win in NJ. It's time to move out with this increase in a use/regressive tax. Only the poor suffer from this tax.

While we partially subsidize the prim Priuses and other hybrids and totally underwrite the EV’s FREE RIDE.

Sucks, doesn’t it!

It’s what the NJ residents voted for. I’m sure they’re ecstatic with the results.

So far PA is the highest on the list and NJ is the lowest. https://www.statista.com/statistics/509649/us-states-with-highest-gas-tax-and-prices/

I used to wait until Jersey to fill my car when I drove from CT to Chicago. In more recent years I would avoid NJ altogether for other reasons. Now there is NO incentive to drive-through/fuel-up-in NJ.

Cor-butthole gave us the highest gas tax to underwrite Philly transit and reward the rest of the state with neverending "structurally deficient" (translation: no bike lanes) bridge replacements.

I remember years ago, on family trips, relatives would wonder why gas is so expensive in Jersey when all those oil refineries are right there? They figured transport costs would be minimal.

But as we all.know, a big piece of the price of gas is going to be taxes,

But wait a minute. This is what the Left wants, right? Reduced gas consumption?

I heard that many gas station owners or lessors make between 5 and 10 cents a gallon profit on gas, regardless of the retail price. These gas station operators make more profit on a bag of chips or a soda, than they do selling you a gallon of gas.

“New Jersey’s gas tax is going up this fall for the second time in two years.”

I just hope it doesn’t get so bad that people there head this way and bring their corrupted N.J. thinking with them. They need an East Berlin-type wall to keep those people hemmed in.

I can’t read the Statista site, but per the American Petroleum Institute, Pennsylvania is highest, NJ is number 11, and Alaska is the lowest. This is as of 7/2/2018.

Problem is liberals from NJ move to freer states and bring their stupid libera ideas with them. Having befouled their nest in NJ they do the same thing over again in FL, GA, TX etc. they don’t move to the red states to become free. They move to the red states to make them just like the places they left.

Here's an interesting related page to put things in context. Gasoline state taxes by state.
