Walker wants DOT to look into expanding portion of I-41

(WLUK) -- One could argue summer is a synonym for construction season. You'll likely find orange barrels in the summer and traffic certain hours of the day.

"I see it sometimes coming the other way," said Luke Agnew of Fall River.

Once a week, Agnew makes the more than 100 mile drive from Columbia County to Door County.

"It's usually late evening or mid-morning," he said.

He tries his best to avoid the stop and go but not all drivers can say the same.

When it comes to the I-41 corridor between De Pere to Appleton, Gov. Scott Walker announced Wednesday:

After speaking with community leaders and elected officials regarding the importance of Interstate 41 to the continued growth of northeastern Wisconsin, I am calling on the Department of Transportation to evaluate expanding the Interstate 41 section between Appleton and DePere. I want to thank Senator Roger Roth, Representative Jim Steineke, and Representative David Murphy for their leadership on this issue.

The DOT said Wednesday, a study could take six months.

"We're going to look at the safety factors. We're going to look at the crash data factors, we're going to look at traffic forecasting," said Mark Kantola, DOT communications manager for northeast Wisconsin.

After data is collected, the DOT said the next step would be to hand that information over to the Transportation Projects Commission. According to the DOT, the commission reviews potential projects which could include the whole corridor or a portion of it and gives recommendations to the governor and Legislature.

Rep. Amanda Stuck, D-Appleton, said possible I-41 expansion is a good thing for the area but for now it's just a study.

"There's no funding there to actually make this happen. We have several projects already who are in this phase, a little farther along that have already been suspended or on hold for numerous reasons so even if we do a study, there's no guarantee that anything will actually happen unless there's funding forward," Stuck said.

Rep. Dave Murphy, R-Greenviille, agrees with Walker and in a statement Murphy said he'd like to see 41 go from four to six lanes between Highway 15 and Highway 441.

Murphy went on to say, "Improving the six mile stretch is the first, and most critical step, in realizing the dream of a six lane highway all the way to Green Bay."

I would like to see the traffic study on which areas that will be expanded have the opportunity for expanding their businesses.

That stretch of highway is overloaded with only two lanes in each direction.
