A veteran pulled over to help a stuck truck. Its driver was a hit man hired to kill him.

When police found Carlos Cruz-Echevarria dead near his home last Veterans Day, he was lying face down in a ditch, shot multiple times in the head. Beside him was a truck stuck in the mud. Later, the 60-year-old army veteran’s car was found several miles away, torched. It seemed like a random, senseless killing: authorities thought Cruz-Echevarria had been robbed and left for dead after stopping to help a stranger on a Daytona Beach roadside. But a year-long investigation has revealed that it was anything but random.

In a savage stroke of fate, a passing driver stopped to help him out: Cruz-Echevarria. As he bent to inspect the truck, authorities said, Bascom shot him multiple times in the head.

The killing was set in motion more than six months earlier, investigators say. Cruz-Echevarria honked at the car in front of him as it stood still at a green light in May 2017. The other driver, Kelsey McFoley, 28, pulled up beside Cruz-Echevarria at the next intersection and brandished a gun, investigators said at the news conference. Cruz-Echevarria managed to write down the car’s license plate number and picked McFoley out of a lineup later, authorities say.

Here in Florida, you can get the death penalty for hiring a hit man and be executed if the hit man kills someone. It has happened before.................

“That’s how they got Bonnie & Clyde.”

The lawmen gave the duo about the same chance they had given a couple of lawmen.

Not criticizing it, just remarking on the similar tactic.

Is it standard for Lawyers or the courts to give their clients the address of the plaintiffs in cases where violent altercations have occurred?

Reading comments it seems there are more than a few who think these animals should receive life sentences instead of the death penalty. Who is punished then? The animals that did this with three hots a day, better medical than almost everyone, except for illegals, clean clothes, library privileges, internet.................or the taxpayers who will be out millions over these asshats lifetimes paying for it?

The death penalty isn't a deterrent because it is rarely used and then not for many years after the murder and it's just not ..........horrific enough a death for the murderer.

All three alleged co-conspirators were arrested Tuesday in different parts of the state, Henderson said. Bascom was trying to flee — he’d bought a one-way ticket to Texas and was going through security check at Orlando International Airport when he was arrested.

Sad story of evil people killing a guy for nothing. This tidbit gave me pause. I've seen this sort of thing a lot in reports. I never understand how fugitives in flight can be so stupid as to go to the most heavily guarded place in the area, where they have to disarm, identify themselves, and then sit there essentially trapped while under constant surveillance. Dude, steal a car and drive to Texas if that's where your safe space is.

But I'm glad when evil people are stupid, makes getting them off the streets that much easier.

I'd take the death penalty over life in prison....
