The White House on Monday labeled Bob Woodward "reckless" and "careless" after some administration officials refuted claims attributed to them in his new book "Fear: Trump in the White House," ratcheting up its war of words with the Watergate reporter.
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders also didn't rule out a lawsuit against Woodward.
"A number of people have come out and said Woodward never even reached out to corroborate statements attributed to them, which seems incredibly reckless for a book to make such outrageous claims to not even take the time to get a $10 fact-checker to call around and verify that some of these quotes happened," Sanders said during Monday's press briefing.
"When no effort was made it seems like a very careless and reckless way to write a book," she added.
Sanders noted that Defense Secretary James Mattis, chief of staff John Kelly and former Trump attorney John Dowd have "aggressively" pushed back against quotes attributed to them in the book.
"I think those are far more credible sources, and far more reliable voices within this administration and that can accurately tell whats taken place in the building behind me," Sanders said.
However, she dismissed the suggestion that the White House would issue a list of specific claims that are inaccurate in the book.
"I think that would be a complete and utter waste of our time," she said.
The White House has been attacking Woodward since Tuesday, when the first excerpts were published from his new book.
The book, which is set to be released on Tuesday, includes numerous specific instances of high-ranking staff members questioning the presidents competence, and one instance where former top economic aide Gary Cohn steals a document off of Trumps desk that would have withdrawn the U.S. from a trade deal with South Korea.
Woodward's book is based on hundreds of hours of interviews with firsthand sources, meeting notes, personal diaries, files and documents. The Watergate journalist has written a series of tell-all Washington books about previous administrations, a number of which have become best-sellers.
Trump has consistently attacked Woodward in the days since the excerpts were first released. On Monday morning, he called the book a "joke," and labeled the veteran journalist a "liar who is like a Dem operative prior to the Midterms."
Woodward has stood by his reporting despite the White House's response, saying on Sunday that Kelly and Mattis are "not telling the truth" in their denials.
Bob Woodward is in the fiction business.
His new book is fiction.
Woodward has been a deep-state tool since Mark Felt at FBI picked him to be his conduit for FBI’s take-down down of Nixon.
The best move against Woodward would be a series of people to file liable suits against both the author and the publishing house.
It’s not about truth....it’s about money.
Folks.....Carl Berstein & Robert Woodward are washed out has beens. Democrats are in full panic mode...oif they do not win the majority in the House of Representatives this coming November, the Democrat Party is politically dead and destroyed for many years to come.
So...Americans all. vote Republican, Support POTUS, Donald J. Trump, GOP...GOTV!!! And...MAGA!!!
A lawsuit will give more FREE publicity to Woodward’s fictional book. Just ignore. It will fade away within weeks.
Didn’t the journalist’s creed used to be about the “who, what, when and how”? But now they have left out the “who” in favor of “unnamed sources”. It’s like Rush always says...it’s the seriousness of the charge” no matter how unverified the charge is.
They're has-beens. No one cares.
Sure. They didn't "rule out the possibility of a lawsuit" for Fire and Fury when Wolf released that, and nothing came of it.How do you know?
Or maybe this is just another one of your golden opportunities to get another one of your pathetic digs in at Trump.
Because no lawsuit has been filed.
Bob Woodward makes loads of money writing books with anonymous sources. If I were to look into Bob Woodward’s eyes I would see dollar signs.
Say, do you think the NY Times op-ed unnamed writer could be Bob Woodward?
I assume you mean "libel" suits, and anyone who filed one would be subject to very intrusive discovery.
Really?
Where did she say that?
So Woodward claims his unnamed sources are more accurate in recalling statements than the people who actually made the statements. If he claims these cabinets members are lying, he must produce his source. Anything less is traitorous.
cia director William Casey who was on his deathbed and comatose woke up and instead of talking to his family members only spoke to Bob Woodward. Carl Bernstein has been jealous ever since so when Trump came along he did some story telling of his own.
He’s a specialist in obfuscating the real truth under a ton of “noise data”. Brit Hume was trying to defend him and says he does tons and tons of interviews but his omission of saying who actually (supposedly) said what makes it impossible to prove or disprove...he might have mentioned his style also makes it impossible for most of those interviewed to even verify if he is referencing them or not - the perfect soup to use if one wants to create a lot of lies with only a couple of truths sprinkled in.
