The Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division is looking for information to find the person who shot an arrow through a Red-tailed Hawk.
The division received reports of the wounded falcon Sunday in the Hartselle area of Morgan County. A member of the Alabama Hawking Association responded to the scene but was unsuccessful in their efforts to capture the hawk for medical treatment. Efforts to locate and capture the bird continue today.
"Hawks are protected by state and federal laws. Most sportsmen make good, ethical choices, and don't like to see when others choose not to," the division said in a Facebook post, which was accompanied by a dramatic photo of the wounded hawk.
Anyone with information on who shot the bird is asked to call 1-800-272-GAME. All information is kept anonymous.

From what I understand, they have to catch the hawk first.
That is one tough bird.
That’s the way I understand it too.
That is a target point. If it had been a broadhead, that hawk would have died quick.
This was an idiot practicing for bow season. Retrieve the arrow and you can tell where it was bought/cut and draw length. And a lot of archers put ‘signature’ fletching on their arrows (specific colors). Should be kind of easy to find a suspect.

I forgot to add that the size/diameter of the arrow can be tracked as well. Arrows come in different thicknesses and materials these days.
With that being a target point, it may not have been “customized”.
Is there a public or private archery range nearby?
It could have been an accidental shot with the hawk swooping down to catch some prey, and caught something else instead.
But if it was intentional, my bet is on some stupid high school kid. And if so, the kid AND the parents should be punished with whatever maximum fines and jail allowed as well as lifetime bans from obtaining hunting licenses.... And the kid should be shot at with an arrow.
Agree, I have does many photos of Red Tails in different situations and I say that he was on a wire just as he is or a tree branch and the shot came from behind and below

I used to use target points on customized arrows. Just had to make sure it was the same grainage as the broadheads I intended to use.
After realizing that I still had to tune back to broadheads, I stopped using target heads. I use carbon blades (Magnus) that I can re-sharpen after practice/tuning.
Arrows straight out of the box are a lousy way to shoot. One should take into consideration draw length, bow speed with arrow weight, etc.
I realize that this could be a kid with a 15 lb. Fred bear recurve and cheap aluminum arrows bought at a garage sale.
The picture with the arrow still in the bird suggests a light draw weight.
Looks like a Cooper’s Hawk to me.
It's a bird that's almost considered a borderline varmint around here by farmers and hunters.
No reason to go all CSI.

Just for fun; I’d like to run that arrow through the shooters shoulder nice and slow so he feels all of it then force him to keep it in there for a week. Poetic and real justice.

And you have determined that how? Perhaps it was shot for some other reason. While I don’t condone the shooting, lets not be so hasty to blame a hunter.
