Russia launches biggest war games since Cold War
BBC ^ | 11 September 2018

Russia has launched its biggest military exercise since the Cold War, involving about 300,000 service personnel, in eastern Siberia.

China is sending 3,200 troops to take part in "Vostok-2018", with many Chinese armoured vehicles and aircraft. Mongolia is also sending some units.

The last Russian exercise of similar scale was in 1981, during the Cold War, but Vostok-2018 involves more troops.

As the exercises began, Russian President Vladimir Putin met his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping at a forum in the eastern city of Vladivostok and told him "we have a trusting relationship in the sphere of politics, security and defence".

The exercise will be spread across five army training grounds, four airbases and areas in the Sea of Japan, Bering Straits and Sea of Okhotsk. Up to 80 naval vessels will take part, from two Russian fleets.

The drills will not be near the disputed Kuril islands north of Japan, Russia says.

A key aim is to practise the rapid deployment of thousands of troops, as well as aircraft and vehicles, from western Russia to eastern regions, across thousands of miles, TV Zvezda reports. That involves in-flight refuelling of fighter jets.

The scale of Vostok-2018 is equivalent to the forces deployed in one of the big World War Two battles.

A smaller-scale Russia-Belarus exercise was held last year.

President Vladimir Putin has made military modernisation, including new nuclear missiles, a priority.

Russia's armed forces are reckoned to have about one million personnel in total.

A Russian senator and reserve colonel, Frants Klintsevich, said "it suited the West that our units and headquarters lacked combat skills and co-ordination, but times have changed; now we have a different attitude to combat readiness".

War games are expensive.

Wars are more expensive.

I hope they learn the correct answer from the exercise.

The Russians spend lots less than us but use their defense money more wisely. If Putin is going to exert law and order on spending anywhere it is in the Russian military.

Wow. I am really impressed. In-flight refeuling. I would have been more impressed if their carrier had participated.

The spectacle of black smoke from her stacks filling the sky and omnipresent tug boats ever at the ready, darting around the way Remoras swim around sharks would have made for a thrilling war pageant.

Only kidding. I am sure this is more of an issue with the person who wrote the column.

This is good news. Should remind the EU and Asian allies of reality

No doubt the enemedia will exploit increased tensions to argue that if or when Trump releases more info (FISA warrants FBI/DOJ texts, e-mails) he is compromising national security.

You caught that as well. Two disparate thoughts that really have little or nothing to do with each other and a writer who thinks he has produced a profound statement...Or maybe the Russians have found a way to cram thousands of their troops into fighter jets...

IIRC, they lost the Kursk in a war game.

Kind of a waste as we have absolutely NO INTENTIONS WHATSOEVER of EVER invading Russia.

But whatever.

I think it’s rude Russia host their little playground antics on 9/11. So much for expressing solidarity against Islamic terrorism.

Their current support for groups like the Taliban says a lot. And regarding Syria, Putin says nastier things about America and barely mentions Islamic State - which he claims is his priority.

Yet he wants us to pay for Syria’s reconstruction.

LOL...that hit my funny bone for sure!

Heck, I don’t have anything against the Russians (except those who think Mother Russia and her Communist ideals are sorely missed) and they make some nice hardware, but...I’ll take the American or Israeli package any day...:)
