Texas education board retreats on stripping 'heroic' Alamo defenders from curriculum

The Texas State Board of Education appears to have decided the heroism of the Alamo is worth teaching to students after all.

State politicians erupted in protest this month after a volunteer team of educators, looking for ways to “streamline” the state’s social studies curriculum, recommended scrubbing references to “all the heroic defenders” at the Alamo from classroom teaching plans.

Gov. Greg Abbott and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, both Republicans, accused the panel of allowing the dictates of political correctness to run wild and demanded that Texans call the board to complain.

Rep. Ted Poe showed up personally before the board on Tuesday to demand respect for history. He quoted from William B. Travis’ letter to “the people of Texas and all the Americans in the world” seeking reinforcements for about 200 men holed up at the Alamo Mission in 1836, making a doomed stand against a Mexican army about 10 times that size led by Gen. Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna.

The board, having been sufficiently chastened, voted Wednesday to maintain references to heroism — but with an additional nod to diversity.

Under the latest plan, seventh-graders asked to “explain the issues surrounding significant events of the Texas Revolution” will now be expected to know “the heroism of the diverse defenders who gave their lives” at the Alamo.

The vote, which must be confirmed in final adoption of the curriculum this year, was unanimous.

Sad that this question even arises in what is loosely referred to as "education" in America.

An enlightened People Possessing a clear understanding of the failure of previous civilizations to achieve and sustain freedom for individuals, our forefathers discovered some timeless truths about human nature, the struggle for individual liberty, the human tendency toward abuse of power, and the means for curbing that tendency through Constitutional self-government. Jefferson's Bill For The More General Diffusion Of Knowledge For Virginia declared:
"...experience hath shewn, that even under the best forms (of government), those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny; and it is believed that the most effectual means of preventing this would be, to illuminate...the minds of the people...to give them knowledge of those facts, which history exhibiteth. History, by apprizing them of the past, will enable them to judge of the future...it will qualify them judges of the actions and designs of men; it will enable them to know ambition under every disguise it may assume; and knowing it, to defeat its views.."
Education was not perceived by the Founders to be a mere process for teaching basic skills. It was much, much more. Education included the very process by which the people of America would understand and be able to preserve their liberty and secure their Creator-endowed rights. Understanding the nature and origin of their rights and the means of preserving them, the people would be capable of self government, for they would recognize any threats to liberty and "nip the shoots of arbitrary power in the bud." (Adams)

Those Alamo defenders couldn’t have been “heroes.” After all they were being vry offensive to Hispanic people.

Would this be a classic example, of “politicians don’t see the light, till they feel the heat?”

A tribute to the heroes of Texas, which included plenty of ‘Hispanics’. The story of Juan Seguin and his associates is as stirring and American as the story of Travis and Bowie.

Thank you for the Bump. The combined powers of bureaucrats, federal and state, along with their combined enablers and funders, including the largest unions in America—the teachers’ unions—and ignorance among the populace, have produced a constitutionally-illiterate citizenry which endangers liberty for people all over the world.

The pubic school powers are bad for children. They are in the camps of Baal, Ashtaroth and those mentioned in Psalms 14:1. Escape to a group of believers in Christ. And pray for revival in the USA.

Good. Senator Cruz and Governor Abbott were totally against this insult to the heroes of the Alamo!

REMEMBER THE ALAMO!

When I taught, it was fun tearing apart the Texas History textbooks and teaching my students the truth.

After all they were being vry offensive to Hispanic people.

A lot of them were Hispanic.

Although most did decamp about a week before the battle ended and thus most survived.
