French President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist LREM party is neck-and-neck with the far-right Rassemblement National, formerly the National Front, for the May 2019 European Parliament elections, according to poll results published on Thursday.

The two parties scored 21.5 percent and 21 percent of voting intentions respectively in the survey by Odoxa-Dentsu Consulting.

The conservative Les Republicains party came in third place with 14 percent of voting intentions, followed by far-left La France Insoumise with 12.5 percent.

The Socialist Party of previous president François Hollande won just 4.5 percent, fewer than green party Europe Écologie Les Verts with five percent. …

Marion Marechal-Le Pen (Marine Le Pen’s niece) is the ideological leader of the French right. She dropped both Le Pen from her name and the former party name ‘Front Nationale’ to completely rid the movement of any prior Nazi associations. (Holocaust denialism on the part of her grandfather.)

I wonder if the poll is accurate or if it undercounts shy rightwing voters.

Slightly off topic but does anyone know how the accuracy of European polling compares to US polling in general?

This seems like good news, but I European politics confuse me.

Can anyone confirm?

Rejecting Nazism is good.

Everyone should reject Nazism.

Marion wants to be known for her own positions instead of being known for the positions of her relatives.

Macron isn’t centrist. He only pretended to be. The French are wising up.

French politics are extremely difficult to understand as so many processes are different from ours. Every country in Europe has its differences and don’t forget some are still basically monarchies. “European” politics doesn’t exist. You must take each country individually. The “European Union” deprives countries of their sovereignty and you will soon see other countries follow Brexit’s example. The lawmakers of the EU are not elected. They are bureaucrats and grabbing for more power all the time. Nigel Farage drives them crazy. I love to watch him tangle with them on a regular basis.
Currently, Hungary, Poland, and Italy are driving Merkle and the EU batty.

IMO they are a bit more accurate than ours. Remember, most European countries are very small and therefore easier to poll. One major difficulty is because of the multiple parties and another difficulty, particularly in France, is the volatility of the citizens. They can change their minds in a heartbeat.

Although socially liberal, Macron’s economic initiatives have been ‘centrist’ and even business friendly/pro-free market. It is worth noting also, that there has not a been MAJOR terrorist attack on French soil under his watch. Remember that barely two-three years ago: whole night clubs were being shot up in Paris and civilians were being bulldozed by the hundreds in Nice...A Catholic priest was beheaded by ISIS in the middle of a Normandy village mass etc...

Macron has brought law and order into the country. The atmosphere has changed for the better. He deserves credit for that.

However, I think what sets the impulses of countries like France and Germany apart from their eastern counterparts — is their head/empire mentality.

While Britain is an island that retains a monarchy, a Commonwealth, and inextricable bonds with America...France and Germany have a far more vested interest in Pan-Europeanism. It’s the only way they can truly mount up to superpower status and compete with America.

That’s what this is about. Being able to compete with us.

“While Britain is an island that retains a monarchy,”

Unlike the US where the President is both the Head of State as well as the Head of Government, in Britain the PM is the Head of Government while the King/Queen is the Head of State. There are no major countries in Europe where these functions reside solely in a monarch.

Yes but even in its symbolic sense: the British monarchy distinguishes British identity, its sense of sovereignty, and its relationship towards Europe. (When comparing to France/Germany in particular.)

And as stated before, it has a closer bond to the U.S. historically (for obvious reasons) and presides over a thriving Commonwealth of nations.

To be fair, France probably would have consistently retained its monarchy had the French Revolution never happened, and the only reason Germany lacks a monarchy was because of the Treaty of Versailles. If you ask me, we if anything should restore the monarchy (the French Revolution and everything related to it is nothing more than very bad news).

Macron is leftist scum. I love to see Italy’s Trump attacking him via the media.

Funny you say “pan-Europeanism”. It echoes a similar term from the 1930s.
