State in firing line if ban on Israeli settlement imports passes [Ireland]

The State could face infringement proceedings by the EU or a third party if a Bill that would ban imports from Israeli settlements in occupied Palestinian territories is passed, the European Commission has warned.

A Government official privately sought the advice of the Commission’s trade directorate last week on the proposed legislation, which is sponsored by Independent Senator Frances Black and passed its first vote in the Seanad in July with the support of Fianna Fáil, Sinn Féin, Labour and some independents.

Fine Gael opposes the passage of the Control of Economic Activity (Occupied Territories) Bill 2018 on the basis of advice from the Attorney General that trade is an exclusive competence of the EU and under EU law Ireland cannot introduce a unilateral ban on goods imported from Israeli settlements.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney has said the Government opposes Israeli settlements on Palestinian lands. But he also said that international trade fell under the common commercial policy of the EU and that legally no member state has taken action on a national basis on such an issue. […]

The Government opposes the Israeli settlements, which are illegal under international law. Israel disputes this. Israel captured the West Bank and East Jerusalem in the 1967 war and has since built settlements there. …

Funny that it’s the EU Commission that puts a stop to this here; they are just as much anti-Israel as the rest of the EU, so this is about their power versus the power of the member states.

If they do this, I hope Trump cuts diplomatic relations AND trade with Ireland.

Why shouldn’t China establish ports everywhere? China has TRILLIONS of dollars with the trade surplus with USA.

Sooner we impose tariffs on ALL Chinese imports, sooner China will begin selling all that port property they have purchased, to feed the 1.5 Billion Chinese.

Didn’t know that Ireland was so anti-Israel.

Well, we can be anti-Ireland (wool sweaters, soaps, cheeses, etc).

My new son-in-law is Irish, a US Marine combat veteran of two wars, who married my Jewish daughter and became a stepfather to my Jewish Granddaughter. He would fight for Israel in a second, even if it was against Ireland.

My best friend is a NY born, 3rd generation Irish-American disabled policeman. He’s as pro-Israel as he is pro-Catholic (he’s old Vatican, not this new Marxist crap). His wife is from Ireland, a lovely lady.

What’s happening to the Irish? Do they really believe that the PLO-supporting Marxists of the IRA and IRA-Provos are representative of that beautiful country? If so, screw them.

It’s more the EU propaganda than the IRA propaganda.

The EU Commission appears to be pushing back on anti-Israel legislation here, but what it’s saying instead is that the Irish government doesn’t have the power over its own trade policy anymore rather than disagreeing with the position of “independent” leftists like Frances Black.

> the Irish government doesn’t have the power over its own trade policy anymore

It doesn’t, because it gave that power up to the EU. You can’t be in the common market and still set your own trade policy.

The Irish are well aware of this and during Brexit negotiations they gloated about using their EU single market membership as leverage against the UK. According to this story, some of them are trying to have it both ways.

What’s happening to the Irish?

They are celebrating in the streets that they can kill their babies, and importing their own replacements as fast as possible.
