Bowie High students claim discrimination over 'religious' parking spots

A special perk for seniors at Austin’s Bowie High School is feeling like a punishment for some after the students said they were told to change — or were denied — the designs they wanted to paint on their reserved parking spots. One student, who asked to not be named, said Principal Mark Robinson told her to make it obvious her painting of the Taj Mahal was not a mosque. The student, who is from India, said the painting was previously approved by school staff well before school started, but Robinson only recently told her it was not allowed. Another student submitted a painting meant to be a self-portrait of herself, showing an African-American girl wearing a shirt that reads “Black Girl Magic.” Senior Kennedy Hartman said school staff didn’t feel comfortable with the phrase, and only approved the painting after she removed it.

The city motto - Keepin' Austin weird.

Would painting the American Sign Language number 9 be "ok"?

Students and society would be better served to have them in the classroom instead of outside playing in the parking lot.

The Taj Mahal may not be a mosque (it’s a tomb), but its builder certainly was a raggie.

I would never recognize that as the taj mahal.

Whoever drew that either really sucks as an artist, or sought to create controversy.

Shouldn’t they be studying instead of decorating parking places? Ridiculous!

“school staff didn’t feel comfortable with the phrase, and only approved the painting after she removed it.”

The next thing that will happen is the death penalty will be your punishment if you make anyone feel uncomfortable..

Shouldn't a tomb be considered as much of a religious site as a mosque?

If they're against religious symbolism I wonder what they would have done if someone had painted a blue cross of Saint Andrew emblazoned with white stars and lined with white strips against a red background? Principal might have stroked out.

Taj Mahal. Magical place. Definite bucket list item if they can tame the effects that the heavily polluted river behind it are having on the structure.

The students design is Islamic. It is not just the mosque in outline below, it is the crescent moon above.

Sheesh! Just how clueless are school administrators in Austin? Oh, right. Austin.
