Texas State Board of Education votes to erase Hillary Clinton from history curriculum

The State Board of Education in Texas voted on Friday to eliminate several historical figures, including Hillary Clinton and Helen Keller, from the state's social studies curriculum.

Barbara Cargill, a Texas Republican and member of the board, told The Dallas Morning News that "the recommendation to eliminate Helen Keller and Hillary Clinton was made by [Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills] work groups."

"However the board did vote to agree with the work groups' recommendations," Cargill pointed out. "In speaking to teachers and testifiers, they did not mention these specific deletions."

The decision made by the 15-member body reportedly came as part of an overall effort to "streamline" the state's social studies curriculum.

Texas high school students have been required to learn about Clinton after the former first lady made history in 2016 by becoming the first woman to be the presidential nominee of a major political party.

Hillary in the dustbin of history. But she helped the GOP so much in 1994!

Is the Benghazi terrorist attack of 9-11-2012 covered?
Is the torture, abuse, and murder of a POW named Momar Gaddafi covered?

Is the black woman who ran for President in 1972 covered?

Is Walter Mondale covered?

Who was Hillary’s VP running mate, does anyone even remember at this point?

What does it matter at this point in time anyhow?

Wipe the slate clean like with a rag...

She absolutely should be in the curriculum ... but only if she is described accurately.

she was the first women to win a major parties nomination for POTUS. It is hard not to talk about politics for the past 20+ years without mentioning her.

Love her or hate her, Hillary is just another politician. There is no need to include her in any history curriculum. She would, however, make an interesting case study in a criminal justice curriculum.

Helen Keller is different. Her story is unique, and an inspiration. She’s worth a mention, IMO.

Why was she ever in it in the first place?

She's worth a mention, and it should be noted that she was a fire-breathing socialist.

History is written by the winners.

We are told that this or that presidential election is historic.

EVERY presidency is historic to a degree (but they aren’t all covered in a semester or two, if at all).

The losers not so much, merely a footnote.

Oh, yes. But that part need not be told in any brief study of her. Not because of any censorship reason, but because it’s not relevant to why she should be studied in the first place.

In a way, it’s like a great inventor who later in life became a alcoholic. The alcoholic part is probably not relevant.

If you do not learn from history, you’re doomed to repeat it.

Don’t know why Hillary needs to specifically be part of the history curriculum. Certainly everyone in school above the 3rd grade has heard of her and knows who she is/was. On the other hand, is President Polk specifically part of the curriculum? He admitted Texas to the Union, acquired the Southwest and Oregon Territory. Obviously much more historically significant than Felonia.

I think we need to add a 13th year of schooling just to cover history.

And history -only-. We have to keep wiping things out as we add new stuff in. Native American history was the first to go.

Well, we have it of sorts. It’s called college.

You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink

You can send a kid to school but you can’t make him think

Those that can, will

“she was the first women to win a major parties nomination for POTUS. “

There were lots of “first” items in history. Just because they were first at something doesn’t make them significant.

In 1872, Victoria Woodhull was the first woman presidential candidate.

Do you remember her? Why not?

In all my interaction with the blind (I worked with the blind for a long time) they are very a-political. Nothing up there matters to them. They live in a very different reality.

Watch the youtube videos of “The blind movie critic”. This is Tommy Edison who did the traffic reports for WPLR in CT. He is one of the most influential people in my life.

For them a world of public assistance is par for the course. He’s very independent and has shunned many of the programs for the blind (No dog, no government assistance, etc) and has found a professional life that many of us would love to have. One of the more mind bending exercises was when he was asked to draw a cat. Being born blind, he has never seen one. He corrects us by saying that his world is completely 3dimensional. He has no 2 dimensional anything in his life. He doesn’t understand horizons and we don’t understand that spaghetti is really gross.

Learning about the blind is something that everyone should spend some time to do . I dont’ know about high school curriculum but the Helen Keller lesson is important for several reasons. And we can’t remove all of the leftists from our culture. We need to start teaching how dangerous this is.

And technically ‘current events’ is not history as it is still unfolding.

A firm grasp of civics should come before tackling current events. Unless we are just going to chuck the Constitution and go full tilt Communist as Howard Zinn wanted. Did he ever pen a peoples’ history of global Communism and explain the 100,000,000 dead? Did he tackle slavery in the 20th century under Communism?
