The Cost of Defending Taiwan
Real Clear Defense ^ | September 14, 2018 | Malcolm Davis

Taiwan is a country under siege as it faces the prospect of eventual reunification with China, on China’s terms, and potentially as soon as 2021—the centenary of the founding of the Chinese Communist Party.

Taiwan’s improving relationship with the Trump administration is also a concern for Beijing. Washington has agreed to new arms sales totalling US$1.42 billion—a move that has angered Beijing. The US 2018 National Defense Authorization Act permits US Navy warships to visit Taiwan, and the Taiwan Travel Act signed into law in March allows two-way exchanges between US and Taiwanese officials.

And Trump is putting tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese imports that the revenue from funds the Chinese military.

“The US 2018 National Defense Authorization Act permits US Navy warships to visit Taiwan..”

In the early 70’s Kaohsiung, Taiwan was a common port of call for US Navy vessels.

Taiwan aside; most Americans haven't a clue as to the money we dole out in foreign aid. It should be cut drastically. We cannot take care of the whole world. It's time we put America first!

Most of the time it's the county's own fault for voting in Socialism/Communism.

Money we pour into these countries usually doesn't go to help the people anyway, but into the pockets of dictators, etc. Money we dole out to countries who hate us should be cut out. Period.

It's time we stopped this and started taking care of our own- for instance our poor seniors who must try to survive on Social Security. Most are good, law abiding people who have worked hard all their lives, had the government take money from their paycheck, and are left to try to survive on starvation SS checks.

SS always a bad idea? Playing out, you say? Stop the trillions of foreign aid and fix it!

Dalai Llama visited Stockholm a short time ago.

China pulled a set-up:

sent some tourists to Sweden, who deliberately tried to check in on the wrong day.

Collapse on floor, screaming, cops called.

Cops show up, let them roll around screaming.

Cops drive them to another hotel.

Tourists continue screaming, say cops drove them “to a remote location, where we were TORTURED...”

China condemns Sweden, warns tourist industry to reconsider Sweden as a venue for tourism.

I’m aligned with the Founders as it pertains to this.

No foreign entanglements.

Taiwan does not allow citizens to own firearms.
Doesn’t even let them have airguns at home.
So where’s the freedom that would be lost?

Agree. It will serve as the British Isles did during WWII, an unsinkable aircraft carrier.

There’s no reunification. It was never part of China.

Should be again.

End the stupid “One China Policy”.

Taiwan pays for every nickle of their arms with their own money. Taiwan buys its arms from the DoD, not the manufacturers and pays the DoD a fee for the service.

Ignorant comment. Sorry. I have been to Taiwan. It was one of the most amazing countries I have ever seen. The people are friendly, if shy, and almost completely pro-American, actually American loving. Not anglophile, not pro-Western, but pro-American.

It is not America, but the people are happy, hard working and freedom loving.

We wouldn't be losing any of our freedom.

Taiwan needs to copy the Swiss. The US can not underwrite their defense forever.

Send every discharged soldier (they have mandatory army service) with his battle rifle and 100 rounds of ammunition. Bring them back to base for a Saturday every year for training and updating.

Even the most bloodthirsty communist will think twice about invading, and Taiwan’s independence will be guaranteed.

I’m glad you straightened us out.

I’m for a one-China policy— once China kowtows to Taiwan.
