US President Donald Trump will reportedly announce new tariffs on about $200 billion on Chinese imports. Meanwhile, Washington has invited Chinese officials to restart trade talks later this month.
While Washington extends a carrot to Beijing, it is also swinging a stick. It is nothing new for the US to try to escalate tensions so as to exploit more gains at the negotiating table. The unilateral and hegemonic moves by the US will meet firm countermeasures from China.
Against the backdrop of successive US offensives in the trade war, China will not just play defense. Nowadays economic and trade relations between China and the US are so closely connected that they will not be easily broken by unilateral hegemony. China will choose the most feasible means as countermeasures.
China, as a main driving force of the global economy, is able to correct and push the global economy onto the right path. Domestically, China is undergoing steady and solid economic structural adjustments.
The US still wants to shape Sino-US relations with its strength and consolidate its hegemony. However, today's world will not be easily manipulated by hegemony. China will not passively be subject to the US maneuverings, nor will it allow any super power to achieve its end by peremptory means. It's no longer the time when a country can achieve hegemonic dividends through coercion.
The trade war is in essence a conflict and rivalry between unilateralism and multilateralism. Internal contradictions in international relations have become sharper. The war will not only affect the trajectory of China-US trade relations, but also the existing global trading system rules and reforms. China will strengthen coordination and cooperation with all countries. China will explore ways to safeguard fairness and justice in the global economy, and will support free trade and the multilateral trading system.

China is a huge structure built on a shaky foundation. What structural adjustments? Building cities with no occupants? They have embarked in a society built entirely on debt; so much debt they can’t even figure out how much. There is no central registry of the loans outstanding as much of the debt, not even the Chinese know how much, is off books. This debt puts pressure on the Chinese to settle up with America before their economy implodes. Trump is right.

In 1980 rush hour in Guangzhou consisted of a few buses,a number of army vehicles,a few government limos (Soviet style) and about 500,000 bicycles.I was there...I saw it.
In 2016 rush hour consisted of bumper-to-bumper Toyotas,Huyundais,a couple of Chinese makes and Buicks (yes,*Buicks*).
But the problem is if you travel a few miles south of the city you see that the people still live like savages.China's economy is a mile wide...and an inch deep.
The biggest mistake,by *far*,that the world's industrialized nations made (the US,Europe,Japan,etc) was to open their ports to Chinese made goods starting in the 80s and 90s.
The world will come to deeply regret that error...and it won't be long now.
It does indeed. I am not so perceptive at times, but this looks they are telegraphing their plans. BTW, I think it was a You Tube video I saw, of two guys in China, showing the utter shoddy workmanship in many homes. They were falling apart in only a few years. There was video, of the entire siding of an apartment building, just falling off the building. Utter trash construction. 👎
How do you think the world will regret China’s industrial power? In what ways do you see the Chinese using their mercantile powers against the world?
I saw a bit of what I think is that same video. There is an amazing amount of empty/bad real estate investment in China. I’d guess this a result of poor/distorted market signals due to them not being truly a free market economy. Command economies suck, and they still have much of that in their system.
A friend was telling me that the whole “empty cities” thing is a big scam the people play on the government.
The people get a piece of property, bare dirt. Start building on it, even though they have no reason to build. The government then comes in and buys the property. Many times, it’s just a shell of a building, separated by some floors. Nothing on the inside. Government comes in, hands over a check and the people take their money and run.
As for the editors/authors of the article, I’d love to have a face to face with them. During which, I’d agree that “Hegemony will no longer pay off for US”. And, given that fact, the US will no longer send it’s hospital ships-free of charge- next time there’s a natural disaster in some 3rd world country ... the US will no longer provide any kind of protection or support to anyone/any country unless they’ve proven they are an ally of the USA ... if people in groups like Doctors Without Borders, wants to go somewhere they will go knowing that the US will not provide any support and that they will be at the mercy of the host country ... basically, the US won’t lift a finger for anyone other than proven allies.
Let’s see how that works out for them. I think it would actually be interesting. At some point Russia and China will realize that we’re no longer in the game and they’ll have to start competing each other. Both are broke and their economies are crumbling. Let ‘em slug it out.

One thing I have never seen discussed, the US Navy is the reason any country can send its ships anywhere. If it were not for the US Navy there would be sphere’s of influence where any transit had to be paid for; much like the Barbary pirates of two centuries ago. Any country, no matter how weak or how belligerent to the US, North Korea, for example, can ship their goods anywhere without fear. Take that certainty away, and the world’s economy would be a vastly different thing.
NATO, especially, is not contributing anything to the US efforts to maintain a free world. I’d argue they are inhibiting the US’ efforts by underfunding their military and developing energy relations with Russia. Trump’s efforts to realign the world are much to the world’s advantage and NATO and other “allies” should stop fighting Trump and start helping him. (Because of the media, no conservative can be a prophet in his own time. Only history reveals him to us.)
Better for us to have this trade war with them now, then a shooting war with them when they are ready.
Their oppressive communist regime and military need to be starved of resources.
