Amazon's HQ2 Going to a City You've Never Heard of, Site Claims
Newsmax (ugh) ^ | 19 September 2018 | Bill Hoffmann

The site, founded by best-selling author/researcher Bert Sperling, claims that Amazon – a company whose stock surpassed $1 trillion in valuation earlier this month -- will put its roots down in a relatively remote area of Northern Virginia known as Oatlands.

If that name doesn’t exactly ring a bell, don’t feel badly. Oatlands is a leafy, unincorporated community just outside Leesburg, Va. -- and Leesburg itself only has about 52,000 residents.

“We can now confidently say that the new Amazon HQ2 will be located … in Northern Virginia near the Maryland border, in a small community that hasn’t been mentioned by other experts or publications,” BestPlaces.net declared Monday.

Not enamored with Newsmax but this impacts NOVA; would like to hear if this move could be an attempt to continuing turning VA blue.

That is sad but not as sad as it would be if they picked Denver.

It’s not real news, it’s just a best guess from a website that specializes in analyzing the best places for things like corporate relocations.

Oatlands?

Really, as if traffic on Rt 15 isn't bad enough. No way it'll be Oatlands unless they're gonna build a new city for all the workers too.

Oatlands?

Yipee! It isn’t going to be Austin, TX and causing more traffic backups, higher taxes and causing a worse housing situation.

AMZN will hire in the tens of thousands wherever it goes. They’re catching hell here in deep blue Seattle for driving housing costs up.

NOVA has been an extension of DC for generations. Problem is most of VA is geographically red, so more blue AMZN progressive zombies in NOVA won’t change NOVA but could impact VA in total politically.

No matter where they put it, poor old retirees won’t be able to afford their property taxes in a few years.

The people who work there won’t be car-owners, silly - they Uber!

And they won’t use the highways, because they’ll just build a new high-speed rail line out to Oatlands...well, YOU will, that is...

IIRC, when Disney was looking for a location for Disney World, they bought up all the land under various corporate names so nobody would know what they were doing. And back then it was dirt cheap in the middle of nowhere.

I wonder if this whole competition was a decoy.

If true, it would be a disappointing and, to me at least, surprising choice. Another big suburban office park with most employees driving to work from their homes in the endless suburb is not cutting edge thinking. In fact, it's about as 1960's-think as you could get.

And no, Oatlands is not served by the Silver Line, which is currently planned to end in Ashburn, some miles short of Leesburg. Of course, I imagine Metro would extend the line if that's Amazon's price. But all that would do is put Amazon at the end of a single metro line, not at a juncture which would give employees a much greater range of choice.

But hey … there's no question that a greenfields location would be cheaper, on the assumption that all the local authorities would roll over and give Amazon everything it asks for in terms of zoning and infrastructure costs. But this would mean that Amazon's great location hunt would have come down to nothing more than another suburban sprawl project in an emerging edge city.

Amazon is aiming for a lot of new government business. This would be a good start.
