Notorious NorCal Rapist Suspect Arrested

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (CN) — Five months after authorities cracked a decades-old cold case by nabbing the Golden State Killer, law enforcement officials announced Friday the capture of another notorious California predator, the NorCal rapist, who is accused of raping at least 10 women over 15 years.

Officers arrested 58-year-old Roy Charles Waller Thursday morning as he arrived at work at the University of California Berkeley. Authorities found Waller by applying the same method used to catch the Golden State Killer – matching old crime scene DNA with data uploaded to the website of a Florida-based genealogy company called GED match.

“The answer has always been in the DNA,” Sacramento District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert said during a press conference at the state capital Friday morning.

Waller is suspected of raping at least 10 women in Rohnert Park, Sonoma, Vallejo, Martinez, Woodland, Chico, Davis and Sacramento from the early 1990s to mid-2000s. The first known assault took place in Rohnert Park in 1991. The most recent assault occurred in Sacramento in 2006.

Another cold case solved by DNA. This guy was married, had a good job at UC Berkeley, apparently rape was just a hobby, maybe only when his wife was out of town.

There’s a picture of him at the CNS site, see link above. It’s apparently his booking photo and he looks a bit too happy with himself.

That’s a strange time to flash a smile. Does he understand this is not his Birthday Party?
Some people are so sick, they will commit horrible crimes and find it difficult not to brag about getting away with it. They primarily consider it some kind of game, a way to take high risks and get thrills.
The Boston Strangler used to write to police and inform them about crimes no one yet knew of. He would even leave clues, because he wanted the notoriety.
I think the term Sociopath was made for such animals.

Damn, I hope they don’t still have the DNA found on skyjacker DB Cooper’s cigarette butt filters — someone could be in trouble, maybe even a comfortable FReeper.

Just kidding (I think) but this new familial DNA examination to find criminals is remarkable and should continue to get some monsters off our streets.

On a side note, I guess some people don’t realize what they’re doing by sending their DNA off in the mail. Surprise.

The DNA probably matches a sample from a rape test kit. So they should have the right guy. Good this guy is off the streets, regardless.

I think on that previous guy, it was some relative of his that sent in their DNA, and they got a similar match from the crime scene. The killer had been a suspect at one time - so when they saw his cousin’s (or whomever’s) DNA show up - that just confirmed it.

I knew that this was a likely use for the DNA I uploaded.

There is an infinitely higher chance that it will keep one of my family members from being wrongfully arrested. And if there is a distant relative who gets arrested for a series of sick crimes, well, f’ them.

Yes, it can narrow it down, I believe, even if the suspect did not send in his own.

I hate that we’re all being categorized, filed away by a totalitarian govt....but I guess it has its perks...

Re: “It’s apparently his booking photo and he looks a bit too happy with himself.”

Probably not.

Smiling and relaxed has been a booking photo strategy since at least 2005, when Conservative Congressman Tom DeLay got indicted in Hard Left Austin, Texas.

DeLay’s mug shot was a classic “What? Me Guilty?” photo that was published and commented on all over the world.

“Getting to know you, getting to know alllll about you! Getting to jail you, hoping you don’t jail me tooooo”!

Why on God’s green earth would anyone voluntarily give their dna to a faceless company and expect it to remain anonymous? Oh yeah, I forgot. So you can find out where you “came” from and what illnesses you “might” get in the future. When Liz “I’m an Indian” Warren makes her test public you can bet it will come back positive because that’s what she’ll pay the company to find.

It’s all crap

I agree. Yes, it’s going to catch some criminals. The commercial where the woman checks he DNA and then goes to several countries to dance with “her people” make me want to do a face-palm.

Well, the good news is, people in governments never abuse power. It’s not like we’re closing in on “1984”.

Just need Alexa to listen in and Apple to provide a camera to watch you.

I am sure that nothing could possibly go wrong with all that.

Besides, Twitter and Facebook will help you learn what is acceptable speech and thought. They will also decide what “news” you are allowed to see.
