New plan aims to fix California roads without tax hike

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KCRA) — Organizers of a movement to repeal SB 1, California's gas tax hike that funds road repairs, announced Tuesday they have a plan to fix the state's roads and improve infrastructure without a tax hike.

Opponents of the gas tax increase have said the state should pay for its road repair projects from the existing state budget. Meanwhile, those against getting rid of the gas tax said this is all a distraction.

Proposition 6, which will be on the Nov. 6 ballot, would repeal the state's 12 cent per gallon gas tax increase.

“It’s time that we say, 'No,' to the politicians,” Yes on Prop 6 Gas Tax Repeal Campaign Chair Carl DeMaio said.

The other side is pushing for a "No" vote.

“There's a lot at stake with Prop. 6,” California Alliance for Jobs Executive Director Michael Quigley said.

During a news conference Tuesday, supporters of the tax repeal introduced their proposal to replace Prop. 6. The plan calls for several things:

All gas tax funds to go exclusively to road projects

Dedicate car sales tax to infrastructure

End the high speed rail project

Require annual audit

Politicians, leftists, media and unions are opposed to Proposition 6.

It's the new Prop 13.

And CA Republicans are likely to get a tail wind from it. A big one.

This is a shot across the bow.

Once Prop 6 passes, the same groups will come back with their replacement plan, which is itemized above.

Commies are apoplectic.

They know both will pass easily.

We could use one that’s not just one of Jerry Brown’s stale farts!

Certainly that’s all we’ve seen from the state GOP in the last decade or two.

In Colorado they have a proposition in the ballot this year called “Fix our damn roads” which would force the state government to fix the roads using existing funds and no tax hikes.

I love the title.

“All gas tax funds to go exclusively to road projects”

Yep, they’ve been stealing our gas tax to fund their money losing mass transit for decades while deliberately letting roads go to hell. All part of their plan to force everyone but the elites out of their cars.

If the money had been subsidising mass transit, it might have been useful, but I suspect it has been going to the general fund (non-transport related parts of the state gov).

The biggest problem supporters of mass transit have is that they seem to refuse to consider that their arguments are counter productive with 40-60% of the population.

1a 40+% know that global warming is a fraud so arguments based on emissions are at best talking to the wall at worst reason to oppose the project.
1b Anyone who actually runs the numbers quickly realizes that unless there is improbable utilization (30%+?) there is no reduction in fuel burned. The low utilization is due to the non-rush hour operating.

2 Until you have enough demand that the middle class uses the system you are trying to sell buses to people in whose experience the only people who ride the bus are undesirables. The last time they rode the bus it was yellow, and too many towns do not have the routes set up as a system. Note calling people racist because they associate the bus with undesirables does not gain you any political support.

3 Depending on ticket prices, if you are trying to transport more than 2-3 people (i.e. a family) it is cheaper to drive.
