U.S. Navy Places Advance Order for 10 New Destroyers
Maritime Executive ^

The U.S. Navy has awarded contracts for 10 new Arleigh Burke-class destroyers from General Dynamics Bath and Huntington Ingalls Industries.

"The Navy saved $700 million for these 10 ships by using multiyear procurement contracts rather than a single year contracting approach," said James F. Geurts, the assistant secretary of the Navy for R&D and acquisition. "We also have options for an additional five DDG-51s to enable us to continue to accelerate delivery of the outstanding DDG-51 Flight III capabilities to our naval force."

The two contract awards include $3.9 billion for General Dynamics for four destroyers from FY2019 through FY2022, and $5.1 billion for Huntington Ingalls for six destroyers from FY2018 through FY2022

General Dynamics Bath ....

What the hell is Trump doing spending a dime in Collins's state? I hope that the word has gone out far and wide in Bath Maine that orders can be cancelled, men can be thrown out of jobs, women and children out on the streets and real estate values can crash.

It’s so nice to have a real President.

A President who looks out for the country instead of Soros like Obama did.

Does this mean we are back to reality and the DDX and LCS programs are officially done?

“What the hell is Trump doing spending a dime in Collins’s state?”

That is who builds the Arleigh Burkes.

Do you suggest we stop building them? Or, pause that construction schedule?

The LCS are still used but they building fewer of them and are starting a new frigate program. The navy is probably going to build a licensed version of a ship already developed by an ally. I read an article a few weeks back listing a French, Italian and British design as contenders to get them in the water faster.

Of course we would still have 1/2 capacity in MS at Huntington Ingalls.

But the nation needs all of these ships.

DDX was always an experimental program and never meant for mass production.

LCS has been cut short. There will be a new Frigate.

"10 new Arleigh Burke-class destroyers"

Probably the most capable all-purpose ship in our Navy. What the hell were they thinking dumping money into a "shallow-water" fleet? Gunships without real firepower but with real propulsion issues. Damn.

wiki: If the Italian FREMM design is selected, the Marinette Marine shipyard in Wisconsin, part of the Fincantieri group, would build the guided-missile frigates. Marinette Marine is best known for the US Navy Freedom-class littoral combat ship.

On 16 February 2018 Fincantieri Marine was one of 5 companies who were each awarded a $15 million contract for conceptual design of the frigates, which the Navy will evaluate over 16 months ahead of a final request for proposal in 2019 and a contract award in 2020

would look like this Italian design for Australia

Big draw back is its slow 30 kt speed.

There are only three builders with the capability to build navy surface combat ships. Only two can build nuclear submarines. General Dynamics Bath is one of only two that can build both.

We need our constitution far more than we need some ships. I am retired Navy and I still think it is a very easy choice. We can always buy more ships even if we leave a smoking crater in Bath Maine. We cannot buy a new constitution.

General Dynamics Bath does not build nuclear submarines. General Dynamics Electric Boat in Groton CT does that along with Newport News.

“This arrangement gives Bath Iron Works one year off from new destroyer starts as it transitions from the challenging Zumwalt program and the former Flight-IIA design to the new Flight III.

Does the Navy have 10 destroyers worth of officers capable of operating them without killing their own sailors over a hissy fit?

Her vote for Kavanaugh. She doesn’t do it, it all goes away. I’m betting something big will happen in Alaska this week.

I know how the game in DC is played. I live here. I trust Trump to play the game better than any of these idiots and lock in deals that the other side cannot back out of. But remember that our side consists of flakes who cannot call stolen valor what he is.
