Poll finds 70 percent of farmers, rural residents would vote for Trump again

More than 70 percent of rural Americans and farmers say they would vote for Donald Trump for president again, according to a new poll from DTN/Progressive Farmer.

The poll surveyed 1,271 rural residents and farmers and has a margin of error of 2.5 percentage points.

Farmers have been battered by President Trump's trade policies. The trade wars with China, Mexico and Canada have especially driven down the prices of soybeans and pork, two key agricultural exports for Minnesota.

Yet farmers, who believe China in particular must be forced to respect intellectual property rights and play fair with in international steel markets, have been patient with the president, and remain hopeful that he can secure better trade deals for American business in general.

Probably taken before the trade deal was announced

Agribusinessmen understand long-term, big picture thinking because that’s the world they operate in. You have bad years and good years, bumper crops and disasters. They understand the trade situation because they live in or near towns all over flyover country that have been hollowed-out by job losses from factory closings that have moved to China.

In short, they “get it” because they are a lot more strategic in their thinking than most politicians, because they want jobs and oppportunities in the US so their families and children and grandchildren can continue to live the kind of lifestyle they love so much.

Because they are good Americans.

These polls were obviously taken BEFORE the dairy agreement with Canada, so even if skewed low, the numbers are sure to improve.

I’d guess that rural Texas would be close to 95% vote for Trump again.

Many of my relatives are farmers in North and South Dakota.
Many of them act like conservatives until they go to vote. Then they pull the lever for whomever will give them the best handouts. They have been told they cannot survive without handouts.

The younger ones are almost full liberal now. That’s how you get someone like Heitkamp in a red state like ND.

I am not sure the headline is justified by the survey. It seems the survey is just rural people. Its not just farmers. And it does not ask who you voted for last. So if that group has 70% voting for Trump that is about right. If the headline were accurate, it would mean that 30% of farmers changed their mind. But that is not what the pole was testing.

Remember there are a lot of organic little truck farms out there. And some of those always vote democrat. But the multi generational guys are for Trump. Farmers are actually being hit by the Low Carb phase and the strong dollar. Anyone raising Chicken Beef or Pork is doing well. While beans, corn and dairy are hurting.

Exactly the same for relatives in MN! Very conservative except for how they vote.

Don’t forget that many farmers and/or their wives have kept their farmsd afloat by working at factories or plants in nearby towns for years. That is why they understand the big picture better than urban Americans working in some big downtown high rise office building or making a career of living of the public dime.

I live in MN so I know you are right. They actually remind me of union construction workers I met over a 40 year period.
You could talk to them all day about hunting, fishing, beer,
general guy stuff etc. But if you mention politics they get the glassy eye look and the demons take over. I never talk politics with union people or farmers unless I want to get them really mad at me when I tell them the truth. To them, the truth hurts.

Yup, probably more than 90% now. BTW, if anything represents the divide in this country between those inside the beltway and those out, this is it.

They probably mean the neo-communist “organic” farmers ..who in reality don’t own land and actually more resemble well fare than farm workers.recipients.

misleading?? I don’t know if the poll asked first if they voted for trump in 2016. For all we know that 30% would vote differently voted for Clinton and would change to Trump now

h————————————
Our newest poll shows rural residents remain satisfied with Trump’s win by a margin of 54.4% to 35.2%. Zogby polled 1,271 rural residents and farmers for this survey (margin of error is plus or minus 2.5 percentage points).

Zogby asked rural residents if, given a chance, they would cast their ballots differently than they had in 2016. More than 70% said no, although that endorsement may not sound deeply felt.https://www.dtnpf.com/agriculture/web/ag/news/world-policy/article/2018/10/01/survey-shows-rural-support-trump

...plus only considering REPEAT voters...not those that didn’t vote for him last time but will in 2020.

If you voted for him, how can you seriously consider not voting for him in 2020? That’s just dumb...

When Americans are asked to sacrifice for something they will step up if it makes sense. Everyone understood this makes sense.
