I vividly recall the Communist movement on the Berkeley campus (having an apartment fronting that of the Communist leader on campus). I would occasionally be invited in for wine and conversation and recall remarking that it appeared the Rosenburgs would hang. The response blew me away. The Communists were then marching on Telegraph Ave., protesting the innocence of the R. The communist leader said to me, “We do that for effect. We want the R. to hang, we need martyrs for the cause.” Nothing has changed. The Communists still need martyrs, and the little people will still be sacrificed for the cause.
