You wouldnt think that gun owners have a stake in whether to ban greyhound racing in Florida.
But thats what Floridas NRA lobbyist thinks. Ill explain.
In November, Florida voters will be asked to vote on a state constitutional amendment that would prohibit betting on dog races in the state after the year 2020.
The amendment got on the ballot by a 27-10 vote of the Florida Constitution Revision Commission, a body thats assembled once every 20 years to look at making changes to the state constitution. The greyhound measure was forwarded by a bi-partisan group of former and current lawmakers, including Florida Sen. Tom Lee, R-Brandon, and Florida Sen. Darryl Rouson, D-St. Petersburg.

They don’t see a logical contradiction. They look at the world as if it is a perfect garden of Eden polluted by humanity, though they the true believers are good and should manage the garden.
Animals, in this worldview, are the pure innocents. They’re to be protected and cared for by the enlightened and blessed. Baby humans are at best potential caretakers, at worst and in most cases pollution on the planet.
They’re appropriating the concept of original sin but leave out redemption through Christ.
Safe to assume that horse racing is next?
“Who could have imagined that stating support for the humane treatment of animals could be seen as such an alarming threat in Florida?”
The NRA sees this as a slippery slope that leads to the banning of hunting and fishing. A bit of a stretch, but Dims do love the inch-at-a-time process.
I have to admit to enjoying the inhumane treatment of live oysters by cutting them open and then slurping them down.
We have a “rescued” greyhound from Florida. My wife thinks greyhound racing is terrible. I try to tell her that if racing were banned, there wouldn’t be greyhounds to adopt.
Greyhounds can make great pets. In the bad old days, owners would just “put down” their unwanted racers. Now most tracks have adoption programs. You can get a pure-bred dog for not too much money.
I have a friend who owned a greyhound and raced it. He pampered it endlessly. To this day, he carries a picture of the pooch. Greyhounds like to run.
IIRC, 60% have to vote in favor of ending it for the amendment to succeed. There are many undecideds currently.
Ive been dismayed at my fellow Florida citizens ever since they voted to put pigs in our constitution.
I’ve heard radical environmentalists say no one should have pets, they should all be wild.
In that context, of course any “evil” exploitation from eating meat to gambling/profit off animals goes well before “pet parents” lose their “fur babies”.
