Blumenthal Hits Back at Trump for 'Nonsense' Personal Attacks About His Military Service

On Monday, President Trump defended Brett Kavanaugh in part by tearing apart the Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee. He had particularly choice words for Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), who claimed that placing Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court would forever be a "stain" on the institution. He has also stated that Trump's prior reluctance to call an FBI probe into the allegations against the nominee was "tantamount to a cover-up." So, Trump took that as an opportunity to zing Blumenthal this week for fabricating his military service back in 2010.

In a campaign speech Monday, Trump gave Blumenthal a new infamous nickname, "Da Nang Blumenthal."

"You have the great Vietnam War hero - who didn't go to Vietnam - [Sen. Richard] Blumenthal," Trump said . "How about Blumenthal? We call him 'Da Nang Blumenthal.'"

Blumenthal said the president is spewing "nonsense."

Snopes had different facts , noting that the claim Blumenthal misrepresented his military service was "mostly true."

Back in 2010, when Blumenthal was running for the Senate, he told a group of veterans he had served in Vietnam.

“We have learned something important since the days that I served in Vietnam,” Blumenthal said. “And you exemplify it. Whatever we think about the war, whatever we call it — Afghanistan or Iraq — we owe our military men and women unconditional support.”

Those remarks became pretty awkward after The New York Times obtained Blumenthal's Selective Service Record. The document showed he received five separate draft deferments while a college student and then, when those deferments ran out, secured a spot in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves, which was not in Vietnam.

The Times exposed the misleading statement in a piece entitled, "Richard Blumenthal's Words on Vietnam Service Differ from History."

The senator later admitted he had "misspoken."

Trump noted it was more than just a mere misstatement, and it's especially relevant now that he's trying to assassinate Kavanaugh's character.

"For 15 years as the attorney general of Connecticut, he went around telling war stories," Trump told the crowd. "'People dying left and right -- but my platoon marched forward!' He was never in Vietnam. It was a lie. And then he's up there saying, 'We want the truth from Judge Kavanaugh.' And you're getting the truth from Judge Kavanaugh."

-——There is no reason to lie about it.——

There was a very good reason to lie

The reason to lie was to get elected

The man is scum

His constituents are scum

Stolen Valor is not nonsense.

To claim combat service when you had none is dishonorable at the very least...

“Da Nang Blumenthal” is an okay nick, but, I’ve got one, similar, but, slightly better.... here goes...

“Chu Lai” Blumenthal, which rhymes with “You Lie” Blumenthal, which could be shortened to “Chulie” Blumenthal.

Taken from how Hispanics who don’t know English too well, pronounce the “you”, where it sometimes sounds like “chu”;

ChuLie Blumenthal.

I spent a year in Vietnam on a small airbase. I identify myself as a non combat veteran. Even at 21 I knew the difference.

FWIW - maybe the Don should leave the SV attacks to ..

People who
-were actually *in* the military

- actually went to the RVN

- actually *went outside* the wire

you know, real-deal **combat Vets**. We got plenty still around.

Nothing against The Don, but this is more than a little outside of his wheelhouse....

I was in the military but was never ordered to SE Asia.I think that anyone who didn't flee to Canada and didn't lie about having served there is entitled to slam Dickie.IMO the only sins here are Canada and lying.

Trump has deftly tossed a couple of bombs into the Goebbelsmedia’s lap. Da Nang Dick would have been better but that and his “mocking” Fraud. Imagine mocking someone by quoting their own remarks back at them though it is true that that bilge mocks itself.

So now they are forced to defend Fraud and deny another reality with Da Nang Dick.

He is like great boxer, keep jabbing and keeping the opponent off balance. Make him fight your fight.

It is a beautiful thing to watch.

Ronald Reagan was a pre war cavalry officer in the Army Reserve. He was commissioned in the Air Corps when the war started and the Army told him to make training movies. The Army does stuff like that, they are called orders. Reagan never claimed to be on the beach at Iwo Jima or Omaha Beach.

George W. Bush joined the Texas National Guard and flew the F-104 (called the flying coffin) providing air defense against the Russians. He volunteered for Vietnam, but the Air Force didn’t need any F-104 drivers in that theater. Orders, you know. He never claimed to have served in Vietnam.

John Kerry joined the Navy and went to Vietnam. He submitted for himself 3 phony Purple Heart recommendations and a phony recommendation for a Silver Star (really it was a war crime) and used those 3 phony Purple Hearts to get reassigned after 3 months (normal tour in Navy, 13 Months). He claimed that he was a hero and he threw some pawn shop medals over the White House fence.

Bill Clinton wrote a heartfelt letter to Colonel Holmes (my PMS when I was an Army scholarship cadet at the University of Arkansas) and asked to be admitted to the ROTC when he reported to Law School. Holmes admitted him, but when Clinton drew a high lottery number, he wrote a nasty letter to COL Holmes (a survivor of the Bataan Death March), and went to Yale Law. Never served.

Senator Blumenthal enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserves (very difficult in the Vietnam era unless you had a political connection). The Senator served the nation defending our borders against those pesky Canadians. Unfortunately, in a number of speeches he claimed or implied that he served in Vietnam rather than the correct statement that he was a Vietnam ERA veteran. The man is a liar.

...and the Army told him to make training movies.

Because Reagan was deaf in one ear due to a gun fired next to his ear in the shooting of a movie scene.

Even if the Army has a rational reason, it doesn’t matter. Orders is orders. The night before I left Vietnam, my battalion commander told me: you can love the Army all you want, but the Army will never love you back.
